Hmm, I didn't know about this, I could have added it to my original post!

I just got a new computer with Windows 10. The first annoyance I've noticed is the ugly and confusing Start menu (or is it the Windows menu? There are two very different ones reached by clicking or right-clicking).

There were also some outrageous suggestions to collect browsing information to use for various apps and ads that I made sure to disable during install, but people who just accept the quick settings won't ever see that choice.

And finally, Windows 10 only recognized one of my two disks initially; googling revealed this is a shockingly common problem on two-disk machines, one that Microsoft really should fix ASAP. I had to learn a lot about the Disk Manager tool today before I finally had both disks suitably partitioned, formatted and working. And there are many Windows users out there that are even less tech-savvy than me.

Maybe they like to see a flashing tile with a weather report every time they click on the start menu? Roll Eyes

Debian distro, with scid + stockfish + free databases you can download online, is the perfect chess suite for me. The few rare days I need chessbase soft for doing something (review some old old old fritz trainers, for example), I have an XP virtual machine with CB Reader 12 to do that (virtualbox).

No more windows for me. In fact, chessbase reader is the only software I need under Windows. I remember having problems connecting to some fax/printers on Linux some time ago... but fax/printers are now considered pre-historic  Cool

I wasn't aware of this, I'm still using programs from the early 2000s on Windows (such as Homesite and Quicken2004) without any problems, and some shareware from even earlier.
There is definitely an annoying tendency for perfectly good programs to change in order to get you to pay money to upgrade all the time. I'm thinking of Word, for instance (I was perfectly happy with Word 2003, and only stopped using it when they stopped supporting it), and the free Acrobat Reader - version 11 is perfect so now they have introduced 'DC' which is mush worse, apparently!
Anyway, I am very happy with Win 7 (as I was with Win XP which I still use on my portable!) which is a very good OS, unlike Win 8 and 8.1.

Much more likely simply that they'd basically have to do a clean reimplementation to make a port work. Presume far too many man hours of work involved to make that sensible.

They do now (very recently) seem to be trying for online, cloud style, subscriptions. Not sure quite how much of their overall functionality that supports.

I run Ubuntu on my main computer and use Fritz 9, with it's chessbase interface, through Wine. Add the latest Stockfish and other engines and it's OK. The only annoying thing I've found is that searches in databases of millions of games takes longer than it did with Windows.

Others may be used to the improvements made in more recent CB updates though and would miss them, while I remain happy/ignorant with an ancient version.

I've moved to using open-source programs for most things nowadays, but I need to use ChessBase most days. It's strange that they've never made a Linux or Mac version.

Not so strange. Most commercial software on Linux has a longer shelf life. The OS does not force you to upgrade everything every 2-3 years => fewer sales.  Also, it is more likely that plenty of open source add-ons for a given version of chessbase would have appeared which would make updating chessbase even less appealing. Finally I am sure that the CBH format would have been reverse engineered by now by somebody upset enough with chessbase software.

a little off-topic (please delete if it disturbs):
This lead me to run Linux on my notebook and my main pc. I have one machine for chessbase and chess assistant (which I don't use atm no more because of the chessok behavior against me as a custumer).

Installing Linux (Lubuntu) in my case is very simple meanwhile and the notebook is running better under it. It's sufficient for all my purposes except running CB-stuff (magazine and databases).

If you see that nearly all problems with file formats are created each year again by MS(O) it seems astonishing to me, that buyers reinforce that behavior of a company. (Lack of compatibility to the own program, worse GUI, forced buys if you want to stay with the system --> fraud).

Worse than scary that last thing really, its faintly incredible (and genuinely very unhelpful) behaviour. That and the telemetry.

Yes, I've installed the GWX program to remove the Win 10 icon and stop it messing with my computer, I've also turned off automatic updates and hidden all the telemetry updates and any other updates concerning Windows 10.
Whether that will be enough is another question! Roll Eyes

Wouldn't want anything by someone doing that on my main machine.

All the interface/UI look stuff etc has seemed a bit ridiculous for a bit now but I guess could be coped with somehow.

I just read an interesting article by respected Windows and Office writer Woody Leonhard: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3004038/microsoft-windows/review-new-windows-10... which suggests that the 'Fall Update' for Win 10 is disappointing, and Windows 7 is still the superior OS.

I forgot to mention that I found it jarring the way the new Win 10 settings kept going back into the old-style control panel.
