I'm happy to hear that; in general I'd prefer to play 6...d6 over 6...Bc5 (and the lines after 7.Bxc6).

4...Nf6!? – but that's only a move order thing really, since 5 0-0 fxe4 6 dxe4 reaches the main line, after which I'm playing 6...d6. I went back to this a few years ago (having failed to make 5...Bc5 work at all). My record since then is P36, W16, D20, L0.

It's as disreputable as the Old-Indian, to which it tends to transpose.
It's not disreputable when it transposes to the Closed English, with mutual kingside fianchettoes.
Perhaps you are thinking of variations with x...f5 and y...Nf6. Those are slightly disreputable indeed. I'm not sure if it's possible to build a coherent repertoire around them.

@MNb: How about 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 f5 3.d4. I always thought that was good for white, and have played the move order 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 d6 instead, intending 3.d4 exd4 4.Qxd4 Nc6 but 3...f5 against other White third moves. That's also what most authors suggesting ...f5 setups for Black have recommended.

Have I been wrong all these years?

I like 1.c4 e5 2.g3/2.Nc3 f5 very much for Black. In several lines White's extra tempo actually benefits Black when compared to the Sicilian GPA. An example is 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 f5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Nc6 5.e3 d5!? This wouldn't work with the bishop on b4 or c5.
However 1.c4 e5 2.a3 f5 is not recommendable due to the Tal Gambit 3.d4 exd4 4.Nf3 while I don't trust 2.e3 f5 either because of 3.d4.

I meant nothing more ever on that book. Not nothing more full stop Wink

But as for the Caro: almost certainly not. Though I have just checked my record: P43, W26, D13, L4 = 75.6%

Breaking that down:
B/L 5...gxf6 – P9, W5, D2, L2 = 66.7%
Panov 5...g6 – P8, W3, D4, L1 = 62.5%
3 e5 (mostly 3...c5) – P11, W8, D3, L0 = 86.4%
all the rest: P15, W10, D4, L1 = 80%

Not so many games really. I've only used 1...c6 as an "occasional" defence and in fact have only played it once in the past ten years.

Maybe I should go back and play it some more Smiley

I had a look at a few games in my database in the Bishops Opening line 1 e4 e5, 2 Bc4  f5, then played it a few times in online blitz.....when you play 2....f5 it's almost like the line goes dead for about 30-40 seconds.....even though I don't as yet have the benefit of Jonathan's book it is a fun line to play and to date I've managed to survive the opening in all games played.

Chess can be fun an innovative again!!
