I have seen the recent Chessbase DVD by C. Bauer, "Alekhine Revitalized" as repertoire for Black. Nice teh choice of 4...g6
against the Modern.
However, it appears to be based on his earlier book "Modernized Alekhine".
Am I wrong? Any comments ?

There is currently a sale at Modern-Chess, 45% off. That puts this at about $55. It looks like you get a lot:

"The database consists of 65 theoretical chapters, 30 interactive test positions, a Memory Booster, and a Video Version (6h and 30min Running Time)."

For thosee not familiar with Modern-Chess, one can read and play through lines, or watch the video, by logging on to their website. The PGN can be downloaded to your computer.

The free sample is worth the visit.

I'd be shocked if that line was acceptable for Black honestly - I looked at it a long time ago and have 8...O-O 9.Qh3 h6 10.Nf3! dxe5 11.dxe5 Nc6 12.Bxh6 Nxe5 13.Ng5! Qd4 14.Bxg7 Kxg7 15.Nc3 as pretty dicey for Black. Not too many deviations along the way either...

Not sure why he'd ever choose this line anyway - seems like the best Alekhine correspondence players have pretty much determined that 8...Qe7! 9.Ne4 dxe5 10.dxe5! (10.Bg5 has historically been more popular but 10...Qb4 11.c3 Qa5 is holding, albeit complicated) 10...h6 11.Nf6 Kf8 12.Qc3! and now either 12...Na6 or 12...Nc6 draw eventually. Not saying it's sexy or fun, but if you're determined to play 4...g6, this seems like the way. An example game with 12...Na6, which to me seems more straightforward: https://lichess.org/pA2OkcqP

I do wish Marin would put a little more effort into checking his lines with computers, or that his editors would do the same. His insight is generally so good, and his analysis...somewhat lazy. But he seems to be well off, traveling with his wife and enjoying life - I'm not sure I'd want to hole myself up in an office and grovel with Stockfish for hours on end either.  Grin

His preferences show even in the free preview. In his recommended 4.Nf3 g6 line, he goes 5.Bc4 Nb6 6.Bb3 Bg7 7.Ng5 (7.a4 also good enough for White) 7...e6 8.Qf3 0-0 (instead of 8...Qe7), presumably "winning an exchange" on f8.

A small warning, Marins strength is explanation not concrete lines. Dont expect it tot be computer checked. I have several of hes ModernChess bases where concrete moves often can have errors so check before playing.

New Alekhine repertoire by Marin

Following up on some useful surveys on the Alekhine for Chessbase Magazine a few years ago, GM and respected theoretician Mihail Marin has produced a very detailed black repertoire for Modern Chess.

One interesting feature is that in the main lines Marin provides two options for Black, e.g. against 4 Nf3 we are offered both 4...g6 and 4...Bg4.

My first impression is that it's an impressive piece of work but the devil is in the detail, as they say, and some of the recommended lines for Black, even though they might hold up according to the current engines, look quite scary and would require great accuracy to play over the board.
