On a historical note, 9...Nxd4 suffered a blow 40 years ago in Van der Wiel-Sax, which appeared in the first NIC Yearbook.  A (blitz) game Golubev-Horak, which appeared in Chess Publishing last year, was a rerun of it.

I miss the days when 9...Nxd4 seemed fine ...

Actually after 9 0-0-0 black must go for d5 like it or not.

Many "club players" are bluffing with 9 .. Nxd4 Bxd4 Be6 system that leads to a 9 g4 yugoslav like line  but where white gets an important game changing tempo with Kb1 and if white nows theory white wins.

Some "club players" are also playing 9 .. Bd7 but its is also considered winning advantage, often leading to 9 Bc4 yugoslav  like position where white is some tempo up.

Awesome, thanks so much for the answer. Very helpful. I guess I will look up d5 etc..

Question on the dragon with 9 ooo?

Hi all,

New to the dragon, it seems like the move to play after 9 ooo is d5. It looks good but just wondering, any other interesting moves black can play or is it really just d5 if you want a game (or to survive I guess)? Thanks.
