Historical note:  ancient theory (Bruno Parma in the first edition of ECO) gave that as clearly better for White, citing Bisguier-Hearst from the 1954 US Championship. After 10. Nxe6+ fxe6 11. Bg5, Hearst (a US Senior Master and psychologist who died in 2018) played 11...Bb4, which isn't favored these days.

With some more research I think it is (a specific line) in the Semi-Tarrasch. Early piece trades and a very 'boring' position where it is quite hard for white to win.

Wesley So's incredible admission: "It feels like second place is already a victory whenever he [Carlsen] is playing right now because he's like Bobby Fischer back in the 1970s or 1960s. Whenever he's playing in a championship, the others are just playing for the second place." pic.twitter.com/ShiiMGsOOI

FWIW,

There was a Reddit post in r/chess about 8 months ago asking what it was. The basic answer from the discussion was that it is:
"something that is solid , white hates to face and doesn't give white many chances for an advantage."

That kind of rings true if Magnus meant it in a metaphorical sense, rather than actual lines of some formal "defense."

Just a thought...

Yesterday Carlsen spoke of 'the berlin vs 1.d4' in the Champion Chess Tour final vs Wesley So. What line is this exactly? I didn't see all the games.
