A purely practical issue with this variation, especially if you are known to play it, is that White can avoid it very easily with <SNIP>

But why avoid the near-winning regular continuation.

This entire post/thread is mostly TRASH

From my experience the related Sicilian Four Knights is easier to learn and to play.

I think you are onto something there. I think the same could be said of the Lowenthal and the (easier to play) Classical Sicilian variations.

I would welcome it if someone could save the Wilkes-Barre / Traxler-Keres variation of the Two Knights defense. However, I think that door has closed for good.

Thanks for your replies.

I have bought the database and experimented a bit online
with little preparation and quite modest results.

It seems that better preparation than your opponent and
surprise effect are essential to play the pin-variation successful.

From my experience the related Sicilian Four Knights is
easier to learn and to play.

A purely practical issue with this variation, especially if you are known to play it, is that White can avoid it very easily with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.Nc3. This need not be a problem if your existing repertoire is broad enough, e.g. if you can play 3...a6 and go for a Kan having avoided White's Maroczy options with an early c4. However it strikes me as a lot of work for a line which can't ever be your only Open Sicilian.

ChessPub has a game following the natural 8...Be7.
A note at Modern Chess considers 7...Bxc3 8bxc 0-0.

Before this database came out, I would say that the pin does not have a great reputation, does not score well, and is not favored by my computer engine. However, all these things can change with subsequent moves.

With analysis by GM Jobava and IM Krishnater, inspired by games from GM Erigaisi, the pin variation should be considered. I don't have their database and have yet to play through their sample games. If the line appeals to you, go for it. I think you can easily get to the point where your preparation exceeds that of your opponent.

Hi,

there is a new course by Modern Chess about the Sicilian Pin variation.
It is done by GM Jobava and IM Krishnater.
It is based on games by GM Erigaisi.

According to the free preview crucial is:
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Bb4 6.e5 Nd5 7.Bd2 and now
6...Nxc3!? 7.bxc3 Bf8!

Has someone of you played this line already?
Opinions about the Pin Variation in general?
