Want to ask a question about this particular move order 1.Nf3 e6 2.c4 f5 3.g3 Nf6. Is there a problem with 3 ...b6 with the intention of fianchetto ...Bb7 to challenge White's Bg2 setup or is 3 ...Nf6 a more precise move order?

1.Nf3 e6 2.c4 f5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.0-0 0-0 6.d4 d6 7.b4

The first big decision.  Prior to my 7th, I have had this position on the board several times, but with colors reversed and the move in hand, playing the Bird with White.  Here, 7.b4 sets the tone for our struggle: White will try to break through on Black's queenside, while Black will make a push on the kingside.  The side that can best activate and coordinate his pieces should be the victor.  I don't know what database statistics say, but I get the distinct impression that draws aren't common in the IZ.  Perhaps MNb can disabuse me of that...

So am I! It's nice, all those databases with x-million games. Especially with ICCF time limits making choices has become hard. OK, HgMan decides to play the main stuff. I had expected 6.Nc3 here, postponing his choice for one move yet.
What am I to do now? Allow the early queenside attack b2-b4 or prevent it once and for all? I have thought about 6...Qe8 a little, but am not sure about 7.d5 and after 7.Nc3 I have to play d6 anyway.
What the heck, at this moment I don't feel like meeting 6...a5 7.Nc3 d6 8.Re1 Ne4 9.Nxe4. I will save that one for another time. Let me see, if 7.b4 really is that dangerous. Let me find out, if HgMan dares to play it.

I wish I could say that my side of the game was so carefully thought out!

1.Nf3

A bit of gamesmanship at work here.  I know I can expect a Dutch, and was awfully tempted to play 1.f4, which I used to play.  If someone should thrust the f-pawn forward, maybe it should be me.  But there's something to be said for knowing what to expect from your opponent.  I'm not quite sure how MNb would reply to the Bird and I am trying to develop a new repertoire based (very) loosely on Khalifman.

1 ... e6

I remember that this tends to be MNb's preferred entry into the Dutch.  For my part, 2.e4 is out of the question, as I would likely prefer the option of pushing the f-pawn forward.  From a move order perspective, I don't think the French is best after 1.Nf3.

2.c4

As it happens, I would prefer not to avoid the Catalan!  MNb's move order might be better, but I may have already resigned myself to facing the Dutch.  Still: 2 ... Nf6 or 2 ... d5 could lead that way.

2 ... f5 3.g3 Nf6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.0-0

Standard development, so far.  Leaving open the option of an English set-up or a standard Dutch.  Black needs to threaten e6-e5 (with d7-d6) in order to make d2-d4 obligatory.  Best to wait.

A couple of weeks ago I subscribed for an ICCF qualification group. Guess who appeared to be one of my opponents? Just recovered from illness, no one less than HgMan. We thought the regular readers of this site might be interested to follow this game, albeit with a delay of three moves.
Everyone should feel free to kibitz.

HgMan - MNb [A96]
ICCF WS/H/058, 2006
1.Pf3
A la Kramnik according to Khalifman? If I remember well, HgMan has the volumes. Of course he knows my entire repertoire, so it is very possible, that he is eager to accept the challenge.

1...e6
In OTB chess I wouldn't feel like risking the Lisitsyn Gambit. Here we have on average 5 days a move, so this is not the problem. But maybe HgMan intended to play d3, Nc3 and e4. I thought it wiser to avoid this. As I also have the French on my repertoire, this is the logical choice.

2.c4
Does HgMan want to avoid the Catalan? He could have risked a little gamble with 2.g3 f5 (d5 --> Catalan) 3.Bg2 Nf6 4.0-0 followed by e2-e4. Then Black would have to lose a tempo (e7-e6-e5 iso e7-e5). That is not a big deal in this closed position.

2..f5 3.g3 Pf6 4.Lg2 Le7
HgMan does not reveal yet if he wants to play an English (d3) or a regular Iljin-Zjenevsky.
To be continued.
