5...cd is indeed the "book" move, which featured in such noted encounters as Pillsbury-Lasker (twice, with 6. Qxd4) and Fine-Yudovich (with 6. Nxd4, where White managed to be lost in two more moves).  ECO has 5. Bg5 cd as leading to equality.

Now the second book is out with the moeorder exd5 Nxd5 6.e3. For IQP adhernts maybe intressting to study...

I am quite new to the semi tarrasch at all and try to get a picture of all possile lines. So i wondering if..

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 c5 5.bg5

belongs also to the semitarrasch. Couldnt find anything in the theoriesection about it. And Pinter does not mention it. Is 5.bg5 week? At least a normal tarrsch is not possible anymore.  I guess black has to play 5...cxd4 ..or???
Does anyone knows if 5.bg5 is dangerous for black?

To Ametanoitos,
Sorry for seeing so late your reply. You are quite right, but the problem it is rather psychological, I cannot stand the black side where , I have a solid but very passive position, and have the threat of white to push on d5 all the time. And I am not a Caro Kan player to accept the position after e3, as you wrote.
Especially on OTB games this is rather unhealthy.
I prefer other types of QGD variations like the Lasker or even the pure Tarrasch.

There is also some wisdom contained in the old threads of this forum section: Wink

on 6.e4,Nxc3
(even though Polugajevsky-Tal is always quoted, Tal played this line after his remarkable defeat against Nogeiras)

Uh, surely this is generally thought of as a case of the Panov transposing to the Semi-Tarrasch, rather than vice versa.

Dunno, I have seen both. But it is consistent indeed to call it a Semi-Tarrasch, or we would have to call 1.d4 d5 2.c4 dxc4 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 e6 5.Bxc4 c5 6.0-0 cxd4 7.exd4 and 8.Nc3 a Morra Gambit Declined because of 1.e4 c5 2.d4 cxd4 3.c3 d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.cxd4 Nf6 6.Nf3 e6 7.Nc3 Qd8 8.Bc4.

And as far as I know, the usual view is that  Black doesn't gain by delaying ...cd in that Bd3 line.

Then Taimanov in 1980 did not present the usual view. To me 4...c5 5.cxd5 Nxd5 6.e3 Nc6 7.Bd3 Be7 8.0-0 0-0 9.Re1 looks a bit silly, while 8...cxd4 9.exd4 0-0 10.Re1 doesn't.

Black should not play ...cxd4 too early after 4...c5 5.cxd5 Nxd5 6.e3 Nc6 7.Bd3; after Be7 8.0-0 0-0 Black might reach a favourable version of the Panov-Botvinnik.
Note that 7.Bc4 cxd4 (now best according Taimanov and Polugaevsky several decades ago) 8.exd4 Be7 9.0-0 0-0 (9...a6!?) 10.Re1 Nf6 is a transposition to the Queen's Gambit Accepted.

After ...Nxd5 instead of e4 you play e3. Black usually plays ...c4 and cxd4 exd4 (this is the main line) and there you are! The Panov-Botvinik attack! But a relatively passive line for Black. Both Bc4 and Bd3 (better) should give White some edge

Maybe some more moves will help me to understand, how to transpose to the Caro-Kann by e2-e3 instead of e2-e4.  Huh

If you study Fabrego's analysis in True lies in Chess we'll change your mind for the Semi-Tarrasch! In fact Sokolov's analysis in winning Chess Middlegames is not convincing either for White. So, i really like the Semi-T and i try to avoid it by transposing to the Panov Caro Kann by playing e2-e3 instead of e4

After studying the game Polugaevsky- Tal, Alma Ata 1969 I have a doubt if Semi-Tarrasch it is better than the Pure Tarrasch.  Thanks for the information about the book, because I was planning of buying it.

But of course the Semi-Tarrasch enables Black to avoid an isolated pawn, and it was originally conceived as an improvement on the Tarrasch for that reason.

I don't understand something. Why play that move order when you could just play 1..d5 2..e6 3..c5 and get the mainline tarrasch? What advantage is there to that move order?  I am mainly asking because I would rather avoid positions where I must play Nxd5 in response to cxd5 by white. I feel that black does not enjoy the free piece play in those semi tarrasch lines as he does in the mainlines.

Well,

actually I also own this book, and it has all the flaws you mentioned.

But...the analysis is good and quite original, and that's what I like the book for.

So, if you are above 2000/2100 Elo and looking for pure chess content this book is great!

Of course, the book is lacking a logical and accessible presentation and verbal explanations...
