Yes that other line was John Cox's recommendation in his repertoire book. I like 4 a3 slightly more as my opps don't even know that they have to play a5 so I'm just a pawn up for nothing + all the advantages in activity that comes from the line.

@Hadron: Bronznik and Schandorff (in 2009 at least) both follow Topalov-Morozevich Monte Carlo 2005 (rapid) where Topa was just winning before drifting off.

Interesting line that. Had a look at it and even though I like the look of Blacks position when you investigate it further it is not so easy to handle.

9.Qxd4!? as played by Karpov is an excellent practical choice, maybe not best theoretically, but just swap those Queens and simplify. Far more practical than trying to bust the opening.

I can't believe that someone wrote 600 pages on this opening.
