Well, 3...g5 is bad or dubious against most white 3rd moves except 3.Nf3, so h4 just seems slow and weakening. For example 3.h4?/?! d5 4.ed5 Ne7 5.c4 Nf5 intending Ng3, may be one way of exploiting the weaknesses created by h2-h4. Even simpler may be to just play as usual, 3...d5 4.ed5 Nf6 when white is not just a tempo down in the Modern defence, but also has weakened his future king's position if he castles short.

Just an idea, if you want to get past the "real test" of the KingsGambit (g5) why not try my nice little thought of 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.h4!? On another forum they said there could ensue better for black Cunninghams and other things but what do you all think?! Cheesy
I've got good results with [...] 3.Nh3, of which I'm not certain of the name but I'd assume it's the Tartakower gambit after the crazy man who played such oddities.
Regards,
Craig  ;D
I've been playing The Eisenberg gambit (KGA 3.Nh3) quite a few times on the net by now, with generally good results and at least interesting positions.

Most common reply is 3...g5?! which is well met by 4.Nf2 and h4, and 3...d5 when 4.ed5 Bxh3 5.Qe2+ Be7 6.gxh3 is somewhere between += and =.

However, I'm not sure how to reply to 3...Nf6!?
4.e5 Ne4! and Qh4+ is a dangerous threat.
While 4.Nf2 d5 or 4.Nc3 d5 is equal at best for white, any ideas?

Well the first point that Should be made is that anyone who is interested in the Kieseritzy Gambit should download the
articles in issues 45,51 and 52 of the free Internet magazine Correspondence Chess News. There is a tremendous mass of detailed analysis.

A year ago I made a New Years resolution to stop playing The
Blackmar-Diemer Gambit for a year and instead start playing
1. e4 in almost every game. (I only scored 60% with the BDG in the ICCF Champion's league and I was lucky to manage that.)

In my very first ICCF Master Class tournament starting last year I had two Kieseritzy Gambits as white and one as black.
Following are the scores of the two games as white. (The game as black is not yet finished.) I have not yet had time to annotate these games in detail. Both of my opponents were higher rated than me.

36.a5 Rb8 37.Qd4 Bc4 38.b4 Rb5 39.Kc2 Bb8 40.Qd2 Rb7
41.Kb2  1/2-1/2

The next game is an example of my opponent playing an idea in the Fischer Variation given in "101 Chess Opening Surprises" by Graham Burgess. 14. d5 is an improvement over
14.e5 given by Burgess which looks better for black.

If you get really bored then you can always try "The Kings own gambit"   1.e4 e5 2.f4 ef 3.Kf2?!!? Grin ... If you look through many of the old Myers Opening Bulletins (M.O.B) you will find many of these offbeat Kings gambit lines

CraigEvans's mention of 3.Nh3 intrigued me!

Dahlgrun seems to be the only one to mention it, naming it the Eisenberg Gambit (don't know if this is after a person or perhaps an iceberg).

But is 3.Nh3 really playable or is it just something one should only play in blitz?  Undecided

Sorry, guys, I'll reply asap, I am getting internet at home (I've moved recently). Replying while at work is more difficult (all my analysis are at home, of course)

Actually my question about what's supposedly wrong with the Bishop's gambit was directed to Semprun, who started this line. - I'd somehow gotten the idea that the first message was the latest posting...  Roll Eyes

Kaissiber is indeed a good magazine for those who like gambits or unusual openings. Bucker has a site (probably www.kaissiber.de) with information on every issue, and I think a new issue has recently come out, though the magazine seems to have almost a year to catch up after a delay.

One of my favorites is the modest 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 d5 4.exd5 Nf6 5.Be2. So I think 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Be2 d5 is not the best defense against White's 3rd move.

Regarding the 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.f4 variation, Bücker has given: 3...Qf6! 4.Nf3 Bb4+ 5.Kf2 d5!, but perhaps White can improve on that.  I personally don't like the 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Be2 because I think 3...d5 is good and 3...f5! is even better.  As for the King's Gambit as a whole, if Stephan Bücker is still playing, analyzing, and writing about this opening I would try to get my hands on this if I were going to try and play 2.f4.  (Does he still put out that magazine.   I think it was called "Kassiber" or something like that.  Unfortunately I don't know German.
