	In the time I played the Scandinavian Marshall Gambit more often than now, I had decent results with 5...g6. My knowledge of the theory is not really up-to-date, so is there any strong refutational line for White? At the other hand, via the Morra Gambit Declined I quite often got 5...e6 positions as White. I was alway very satisfied with my attacking chances, as Black has problems activating all his pieces.

	Here are two lines that I would consider interesting and worthy of investigation, especially for club players: 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.ed cd 4.c4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nf6 6.Bg5(!) e6 followed by ...Bb4 (as noted by others above) 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.ed cd 4.c4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nf6 6.Bg5(!) Be6!? This line is probably not seen very often at club level, because it does look "anti-positional", but such Caro-Kann experts as Leko and Dreev have played it with success. According to IM Jacob Aagaard in his "Easy Guide" book (which is REALLY good!), the resulting structure is that White often plays Bxf6 and Black retakes with the g-pawn, following it up with ...Bf8-h6. This gives Black three key ideas: 1) the open g-file; 2) the diagonal c1-h6, and 3) the possibility of e7-e5 when supported by a pawn on f6. Black has been known to castle long in this line. Here is an example: Topalov,V (2639) - Leko,P (2544) Vienna Millenium Vienna (5), 1996 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bg5 Be6 7.a3 Qd7 8.Bxf6 gxf6 9.g3 0-0-0 10.Bg2 Bg4 11.f3 Be6 12.c5 Bf5 13.b4 e5 14.Nge2 Qe6 15.dxe5 d4 16.Ne4 d3 17.Nf4 d2+ 18.Kf2 Qc4 19.Bh3 Bxh3 20.Nxh3 Qd4+ 21.Kg2 Nxe5 22.Qb3 Nc4 23.Rhd1 f5 24.Neg5 Rd7 25.f4 Bg7 26.Nf2 Qd5+ 27.Nf3 Bxa1 28.Rxa1 Re8 0-1 Hope this helps.

	- if you want a drawish endgame go for 6...Nc6 - you like to play solid against IQP? play 5...e6 and 6...Bb4 - 5...g6 is a pawn sac, i recommend for aggressive players; look for games of Morozevich I think the main line and 3.e5 are much more dangerous for black

	I don't know what to do against the Panov either. I try and play 5...g6, but have a feeliong it is not very good if White knows what he is doing. And that is usually the case...

	I forget how long ago, but Susan Polgar did an article on the Panov-Botvinnik for Chess Life magazine sometime last year (I think it may have been her first "Opening Secrets" column) So if you still have that issue or can track it down it would probably help you out. If not, you can try alumbrado's line (4. c4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e6) or if you want something a little more offbeat, try 5...g6 which is covered in NCO and involves a fascinating pawn sacrifice.

	Well, I think the most dependable line is (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5 4.c4) 4...Nf6 5.Nc3 e6, with ...Bb4 to follow, but then again, I rarely play 1.e4 with White and have only dabbled with the Caro once or twice with Black, so what do I know?!

	If sometimes we fly too close to the sun, at least this shows we are spreading our wings.

	I feel satisfied playing most variations of the Caro-Kann, but haven't been happy playing against the PB Attack. (or the similiar and often transposing 2.c4). Does anyone here have an opinion on the best option for Black?
