Yes, this was how Fischer was tricked into the Morra (I think) against Korchnoi in Buenos Aires 1960.
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 a6 3.d4 cxd4 and now 4.Nxd4 e5! is good with b5 unavailable to the knight, so White has to play 4.c3.

Another, perhaps even better idea is

1.d4 c5 2.e4 cxd4 3.Nf3 a6! since white is more or less forced to play the Morra now...  Grin

Totally forgot about that one. Actually I have had some trouble with this line in the Morra gambit too so now I tend to avoid it with move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6/Nc6/a6/g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.c3 or course Black can then play 2...d6 but then 4.Nxd4 is fine.

I'm not so sure transposing to the open sicilian is all that easy. 1.d4 c5 2.e4 cxd4 3.Nf3 e5 4.c3 may not be as good for white as traditionally assumed, for example check out the following messy games...

Gallagher J G - Plaskett J [B21/09]
London, 1986 0-1

Gundersen,H (2415) - Söderberg,P (2420) [B21]
Nordisk Femlandskamp 3 B05 ICCF, 15.04.1997
0-1

1.d4 c5 is just a form of Benoni after the obvious 2.d5. If you don't want the Morra gambit then play 2.d4 cxd4 3.Nf3 to enter the open Sicilian. Of course Black can insist on the Franco-Benoni with 2.d4 e6 when 3.Nf3 d5 might not be anything special, but 3.d5! is a good Benoni since White still has the choice between c2-c4 and putting a piece on c4 (e.g. Nb1-d2-c4).

I'm puzzled.  Surely 2.d5! is not just solid but fairly obviously best.

Of course white can take the pawn, but it's just not particularly good. E.g. 1.d4 c5 2.dxc5 e6 is perfectly fine for black. I've however always wondered whether 1.d4 c5 2.e3 d5 3.dxc5 (or however you get to that position) might not be more interesting, basically white seems to be playing the QGA with an extra tempo.

Could easily transpose into Colle like lines. Can white take the pawn?

I have not seen any theory about this move. I was wondering if there are any solid moves for white if I don't want a Smith Morra gambit.

Is there any theory out there about maybe a colle defense with 2.c3
