Yes I did decide to play this as part of my switch from 1.e4 to 1.d4, but after trying to put together a complete 1.d4 repertoire I decided it would be too much work and am going to stick with 1.e4.

Sorry...

There's another more beautiful plan popularised by Seirawan. Getting the e2 Knight out to c1 and from there to a2 or d3. Thats the line I like.

MnB: in the samisch benoni there is no choice for white but to develop his king's knight with Nge2-Ng3. The sooner he gets this maneuver out of the way the better. It is always better to play the "necessary" moves first. That is why I feel 6. Nge2 is strongest in the benoni lines. He may lose his opportunity to play the beneficial Nh3-f2 if Black plays Nbd7 early... but not many black players play the passive Nbd7 lines nowadays anyway.

The choice of white's sixth move all depends on what you feel is the biggest threat to the Samisch. If you (like me) think the Benoni is the biggest threat to the Samisch, then 6. Nge2 is best. On the other hand, if you think the ... e5 lines are most threatening, then 6. Be3 or 6. Bg5 are better. And if you think the panno is most threatening, then (i suspect) 6. Bg5 is best.

Having said all that, all samisch games are always welcome and  i would dearly love Victor to feature more games with 6. Bg5  Grin

The merit of 6.Bg5 is that e5 is punished by 7.dxe5 dxe5 8.Qxd8 Rxd8 9.Nd5.
The second merit of 6.Bg5 is that White can play one system against the various Benoni variations and the King's Indian. It can even arise after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.f3 c5 4.d5 (4.dxc5 Qa5+ leads to something similar to the Accelerated Dragon) etcetera.
I do not understand how 6.Nge2 accelerates kingside development with Bf1 shut in.

Thats precisely the point. Not many are aware of the system. This, to my understanding, system is about keeping the king side water tight (aften castling short) and play on the queen side. Half the time the opponent has no clue of what's going on.

Brian Wall, an American Master taught me this system over email and I in turn taught my 10 year old son. He has quite a few memorable wins over 2100+ For more info visit his site www.walverine.com and search for "Laufer g5" There is an Ivanchuck-Kasparov game in this line which is very sharp and has no instructional value. Angry

6.Nge2 may be the best against Benoni. But it is too commital on other fronts. For example if black plays Byrne system (c6, a6) confronting it with Bd3 may prove to be slower.

I'm in love with is system and I really wish Viktor would provide a detailed survey.

I was only aware of 6. Bg5 after reading Ward's Controversial Samisch book.. doesn't seem too strong to me. speaking as a samisch player myself Dreev's 6. Nge2 looks like the best move against benoni systems.  It has the merit of not committing the dark squared bishop too early, and accelerating king-side development.

In these position king side of white is pretty solid and early middle game play happens on the queen side. I thought play is a bit slow and smooth (asymmetrical pawn structure not withstanding)

6.Bg5 c5 7.d5 indeed leads to a Benoni-type position. And all Benoni-type positions are pretty sharp, due to the asymmetrical pawn structures.

I'm starting this new thread for 2 reasons. One I would really like GM Viktor to do a detailed survey on 6.Bg5 Saemisch. I'll be sending him a email soon.

Second, is to gauge the interest of black players facing this line. My experience is that black players detest this line. For one the line is not sharp. It is in fact very blunt. Virtually any move that comes to your mind as black or white (in the middle game) is a playable move. Smiley

When Viktor decides to cover it, he needs to cover a bit of Benoni (A65 to be precise) also. I don't know how admin is going to sort out this problem with respect to mutually exclusive membership Shocked
