cunard: thank you for the analysis...
Maybe Black must not castle when rook goes to h3 or Black must play Be7 (and not Bb4+) at the beginning to avoid the attack.
11.Nc2 Be7 12. h5 (Sveshnikov-Gulko,Tashkent 1984 (BCO)) Nf8 13.Rh3 Nh7 14.Bd3 (14.Rg3 Ng5 15.Nxg5 hxg5 16.f4 Qc7! 17.fxg5 f6) Ng5
Black will keep the knight on g5 square, because some exchange might open the h-file for the h8 rook. Then Black can play Qb6/Qc7 and choose between long castle or Rc8.

I agree with Fernando here, in that I also play 6...f6.  Since this is in a critical line for me though, I will of course be taking a closer look.  Thanks for the analysis!

Is there anything wrong with the original(?) idea of castling (10 .. o-o) intending after h5 to go Nh8, f6 & Nf7? Obviously it's a different kind of line but it does let you play the Ng6 idea.
(10 .. f6 ^ h5 Nxe5 etc is sadly almost certainly rather unsound Smiley)

I don't really like the look of the 10 .. h6 lines but it might just a predujice against playing f5.

In play the French 1, Watson analysed 6...f6. I have played that since. Short and Ivanchuk also played this move. I will look into your line, though...

I was also crashed in Correspondence chess following PTF3. This time a 6...Qc7 thematic tournament in the Winawer...

French Advanced Variation 5..Bd7
Analysis by Jim Hawksley
John Watson's book Play the French 3 is a bible for French Defence players, over the years I have found John's ideas and analysis to be sound and to stand up well in practical play. One of lines I have played frequently against the Advanced variation is 5...Bd7, this move is very flexible as it waits for White to commit himself to a plan. I have enjoyed success against all of White's attempts for an advantage from this position.
Recently I played an internet game on ICC and followed Watson's recommendation of 6...Nge7, the game played out as per book till move 17. when my opponent varied with 17.Qd2. I now played GM McDonald's suggestion of 17...Be8? and got hit with 18.Bxh6!! (see page 33 of Play the French 3) The game and analysis is presented below. If anyone can suggest improvements for Black apart from avoiding the whole line they will be greatly appreciated.

1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bd7 6.Be2 Nge7 7.Na3 Ng6 8.h4 cxd4 9.cxd4 Bb4+ 10.Kf1 h6 11.Nc2 [ 11.h5 Nf8 12.Nc2 Be7 13.a3 Nh7 14.Rh3 0-0 15.Rg3 Kh8 16.Bf4 f5 17.Qd2 Be8? 18.Bxh6 gxh6 19.Qxh6 Rg8 ( 19...Rf7 20.Qg6 ) 20.Rxg8+ Kxg8 21.Qxe6+ Bf7 22.Qxf5 and here the difference with the main line becomes apparent. White has played the useless 13.a3 compared with Bd3. 22...Qc8 23.Qxc8+ Rxc8 24.g4+/- ]11...Be7 12.h5 [ 12.a3 0-0 13.h5 ]
12...Nf8 13.Rh3 Nh7 14.Bd3 0-0 15.Rg3 Kh8 16.Bf4 f5 17.Qd2
17...Be8? This suggestion by McDonald loses! so Black must find another move, one idea I have looked at is; 17...Qb6!? 18.Rb1 ( 18.Rxg7?! Kxg7 19.Bxh6+ Kh8 20.Bxf8 Rxf8 21.b3 Rg8-/+ ) 18...Nb4 ( 18...Rg8 19.Be3 Rac8 ) 19.Nxb4 Bxb4 ( 19...Qxb4 20.Nh4+- Is a nice trap.) 20.Qe2 ( 20.Qe3 Bb5~~ ) 20...Rfc8 Black must clear the f8 square for the knight. 21.Kg1 Be7= With a complicated position but Black seems OK.]
18.Bxh6! gxh6 [ Declining does not seem an option18...Rg8 19.Bg5 Bxh5 20.Bxe7 Qxe7 21.Ng5 ]
19.Qxh6 Rg8 19...Rf7 20.Qg6+-
 20.Rxg8+ Kxg8 21.Qxe6+ Bf7 22.Qxf5 Nf8
22...Ng5 23.Nxg5 Bxg5 24.f4 Bh4 25.g4+- and White's pawns are awesome. I have tested this position and am unable to hold it for Black. 25...Qc8 26.Qh7+ Kf8 27.Bf5 Qc7 28.Qh8+ Bg8 29.h6+- ]
23.Qg4+ Kh8 24.Bf5 Nh7 [ 24...Bxh5 ]
 25.Bxh7 Kxh7 26.Qf5+ Kg8 27.e6 Be8 28.Ne3 Bf6 29.h6! Prevents the bishop backing to g7. [ 29.Nxd5 Bg7 ]
29...Nb4 [ 29...Nxd4 30.Nxd4 Bxd4 31.Qg4+ ; 29...Rc8 30.Nxd5 Bh8 31.Ng5 ]
 30.a3 Bb5+ 31.Kg1 Bd3 32.Qg4+ Kh7 33.axb4 1-0
Any one any ideas, apart from avoiding the whole line?
