that's on 2...Nc6 3 Nf3 f5
unless he's written a new edition?

Lyth-Tait, Rhyl 1992
which shouldn't really be in MegaCorr at all, seeing as it's an OTB game

Hi Jonathan,

I noticed on Amazon that you have a KG book coming out early 2007.

Will you be covering the Wagenbach in this book?

yes Smiley

Hi Jonathan,

Will you be covering the Wagenbach in this book?

So far the only coverage I've seen were your 2 excellent articles in Chess Mail back in '98 and I would love to see these updated/expanded in some form.  Personally I've played the Wagenbach several times in Corr and had good success with it.  I tend to find my opponent doesn't take it seriously until it is too late.

I can't agree with your assessment of 3...h5!? surely 3...h5 should be ?!

You may be right, but no one's come up with anything decisive as yet.

Quote:
After 1.e4 e5 2.f4 ( better 2.Nf3!) exf4 3.Nf3 h5?!  ( in my opinion) white gets a very nice game after 4.Bc4 with the idea if 4...g5?! 5.0-0 h4?! 6.h3! and white has an enormous positional advantage.

So how do you respond to 4.Bc4 ?

4 Bc4 g5?! gets hit by 5 h4, so Black has to play 4...h4!. Then 5 0-0 g5 6 h3 would reach your position (though I'd probably play 5...d6 first).

Well OK, White certainly has compensation for the pawn. I don't know about "an enormous positional advantage" though. What's your plan as White from this position?

Also, 6 h3 doesn't deserve "!" since Black is not going to play ...h3 any time soon. The desired structure is h4/g5/f4, pre-empting White's h2-h4, and once h3 has been played there's no break with g3 either.

That's not to say 6 h3 is a bad move: it takes g4 away from the c8-bishop which can then struggle to find a square. Then again, there's no real hurry to develop the bishop if White can't break through in the centre (try and get past Black's d6/c6 formation), while h3 may prove a useful hook for a later ...g4.

Another question : who was Wagenbach ?

János Wagenbach is a friend at Mansfield Chess Club. He came up with 3...h5 in a blitz game and it was such a silly idea that we got interested in trying to defend it as Black.

It seems a bit dodgy to me. Mostly Black will play ...c6 (and ...d6) in the Wagenbach, so as to be able to keep the centre closed with ...d6-d5 should White play e4-e5. Sometimes Black can play ...Nc6, but playing it so soon is rather committal.

Also, more specifically, 4...h5 5 d4 g5 6 d5 is a bit annoying.

I sometimes have web browser problems (using Internet Explorer) when I access TJ's page - the page comes up briefly and then the application crashes.  I haven't tracked down a likely cause, but it may be computer and/or local network dependent.  Seem to always have application crash problem when I try to access via a campus network, but do not have problems accessing it from home (via cable internet service).

TJ: I've read some of your other King's Gambit articles in the past and I think your page is fantastic!  But I thought it might be useful for you to know about access problems in case others have similar experiences and some recurring themes crop up which might point the direction to a fix.

Thanks! I suppose the problem you mention may explain why some occasional surfers seem to visit 20 times in 20 minutes. - Unfortunately, I don't know what the cause or remedy is (though Firefox or Opera are certainly preferable to Explorer) - and if it's not specific to any errors in my htmlcode on the page there's not much I can do...  Undecided

I'm on Netscape. Never had any problems. The Mozilla engine also is very much more responsive compared to IE. So your best alternatives now might be to immediately switch to Netscape or Mozilla Firefox. Ohhhh! For heaven's sakes, jus get rid of that IE crap! (I wish microsoft people are reading this  Wink)

Yes indeed! TJ's website is a very rich & informative source. Best part is....its for KGer's only  Wink

TJ's article on the Wagenbach Defense is really outstanding.  Definitely something to whet your appetite and plenty of analysis to get you started if you are considering taking up this line.

I tried so a couple of years ago - in vain.  Sad White has some possibilities to sac a piece in Muzio-style, but Black seems to survive them all.
Thomas Johansson has an article on it on his website:

and guess whose name we find there?  Huh

When I feel like I will check again. Now I have a little question: is the Wagenbach Defence playable in the Vienna version? 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4 exf4 4.Nf3 h5 !?

Sounds interesting indeed, and just the kind of thing to drive Kings Gambiteers nuts.

I will need to research this one.

the plan is to build a forward fortress f4/g5/h4, pre-empting attempts by White to attack the pawn chain
