Frendo,

The answer to the playability, or otherwise, of 8...h5 probably depends on whether 9.Ng5 is merely strong or decisive. I looked a bit at 9...e5 (shuffling pieces around on a board a bit and with no computer check I should add) and Volker Jeschonnek had  analysis of 9... h4 10.d6 e6 (and a mention of the queen sacrifice 10... exd6) in The Chess Correspondent 76 (3).  At the very least there seems to be room for black to put up a fight but one half suspects that white may have something. I am not aware that there have been any games in the 9.Ng5 line following the Zavanelli - Anda.

Cheers, Sören

You may have recommended it sometime ago, but the move 8...h5!? (after 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.d5 Ne5 5.Bf4 Ng6 6.Bg3 f5 7.Nh3 a6 8.Bc4) is certainly new to me.  To me the move looks quite ugly but Black's position does seem to require a drastic solution and the appearance of a move hasn't stopped from from analysing and playing it before.  Is this move still regarded as playable since you posted the games on the website?

I was under the impression that Black wasn't doing to well in the line 1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.d5 Ne5 5.Bf4 Ng6 6.Bg3 (after either 6...a6 or 6...f5).  I'm sure I should do more research on this but does anyone want to make it easy for me and tell me the critical variation (s)?

This (and linked pages) is a couple of years old now but I think these remain some of the more critical lines

Khalifman in Openings for White according to Anand vol. 5, says that black would have been in serious trouble after 9.d5 and backs this up with half a page of analyisis/games

Right.  I'm a retard.  that stuff I said about the caro-kann was non-sense.  shows you how my blindfold skills are: sucky!

I can't see how 1.d4/2.e4 could be the strongest if white has the Scotch as the best option after 2...e5?

Gotta think 1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 is strongest...

Let me ask this: What's better for white- 1.d4 Nc6 2.d5 or 1.e4 Nc6 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4? just curious.

Thanks, tracke.  Interesting choice.  I'm wondering, however, if 2...e5 is better than 2...d5 and, also, if de4 is better than e6, after Ne4 Bf5 Black seems to have a good Caro-Kann where he can play c5 in one go.

1. d4 Nc6 2.d5 Ne5 3.e4 e6 (3...Ng6 !?)  4.dxe6 fxe6 (dxe6 might be playable but such suffering is not for everyone)  5.Nc3 ! is favoured in many books and there is probably a thread here somewhere. Do a game search, there are lots of 1-0 in this line.

1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3. I think almost everyone would agree with Tracke that 3.Nc3s is white's best move here. 3...e6 is a line that has been discussed in the French section. Probably playable at most levels but 3...dxe4 is the more common and now after 4.d5 both 4...Ne5 (both 5.Bf4 and 5.Qd4 lead to interesting and unclear positions) and 4...Nb8 offers fun and playable positions. There have been several threads on these here at chesspublishing.

1.e4 Nc6 2.d4 e5. Yep, emminently playable if you are happy to invite  the Scotch.

I don´t want to go much in variations
(at least not before Wisnewski´s forthcoming book is out)
but in my opinion 1.e4 Nc6?! 2.d4! and 1.d4 Nc6?! 2.e4! are strongest.
And Black´s best chance (in terms of objective soundness, not in terms
of best practical chances) is the french 2...d5! 3.Sc3! e6!

I've looked at many of the threads on this stuff here, but I can't seem to discover a consensus about what white's best approach might be vs. 1...Nc6.  My hunch is with 1.d4 Nc6 2.d5, but I'm not sure...

Insights or comparisons welcome...
