I own Bc4 Gruenfeld, for some reason or another... maybe I didn't think it would be just a tome of theory which I will never read... anyway, the author states that it is no more than a draw, most likely, but that black has a helluva difficult time if he doesn't know the theory in detail.

Too many 30-move forced draws at White's option. Far as I know White's recent attempts have been neutralised to that after some recent troubles. van Wely's 16 Kh1 (was it? Or Qd4?) with which he crushed Sutovsky also seems to have been caught up with. Ball back in White's court, in other words, but a practical problem for Black as a repertoire choice.

I'd suggest you have a look at Sakaev's Grunfeld books where he devotes lots of analysis. Also Van Wely still plays this for White which is worth noting for the fact that about 6 years ago he played this opening for Black.

I suspect theoretically Black is just about surviving. But it's the extent of theory that has to be known which has caused a downgrade in this line's popularity.

What is the status of this line in the exchange variation ?  (14.d5 with the exchange sac)

In Aagaards "Starting out..." it was said that black had troubles in this line, and looking at
a public available database, it seems this line is played very rarely these days.

Thanks in advance.
