	Gelfand may have been caught looking a tournament ahead here. Even so, Kramnik's performance showed clearly why he's the best player in the world right now. (pace Topalov and Kasparov) Thanks again to Ostap, this time for providing us with a site with some analysis. I looked at all the games from http://chessmind.powerblogs.com/files/dortmund2007_rd2.htm ; and couldn't help but think we can do at least as good a job of analysing the games here if we put in a bit of work. It's great that Dennis Monokroussous has given us something to work from, but he made the Alekseev-Mamedyarov game seem a foregone conclusion from the opening. He also didn't give much info on any of the other games. Still, it's better than nothing.

	I voted for Kramnik because Dortmund is "his" tournament (something as the Mtel-Masters for Topalov). Now I am quite curious to see Leko's perfomance, he was very impressive during the candidates qualification.

	I cast my vote for Carlsen before the tournament started though I admit it's a bit of a long shot. However, I've been very impressed with Carlsen's play against top level opposition and as he continues to improve who knows what he'll be capable of? Was the vote for Alekseev recent - after today's game, perhaps? I don't recall Alekseev having any votes early on. As for the exchange sac in Alekseev-Mamedyarov, Dennis Monokroussous characterized it as "Not necessary, but also not bad" in his summary of round 2 at The Chess Mind. He also indicated that White had a nice edge before this point. Nice to see some decisive games today!

	Ostap, you were right! Kramnik takes the lead in the tournament with 1.5/2 and Mamedyarov looked nervous as he lost to Alekseev, who also has 1.5/2. I know I got some grief when I expressed surprise at seeing Mamedyarov at #6 in the world. Judging from his play so far, I was impressed with his first win and really unimpressed by his performance in his loss. He didn't seem to have any idea other than he should win. His exchange sac for a pawn was mathematically acceptable, but he didn't put enough pressure on Alexeev afterwards. Alexeev strikes me as the sort of player who won't beat himself and has enough tactical and technical strength to beat anyone who throws material at him. I don't see Alexeev winning the tournament, but he is setting himself up for an excellent showing! Anand has had the two best players in the world other than himself for the first two rounds and has made two good draws. He had some chances against Leko, but not enough to scare the Hungarian. I'm really glad to see Kramnik has come to play. My concern about his health is that he was weakened by his recent illness and that may not show up until the later rounds. I'm sticking with Anand to win the whole thing.

	My perdictios for the second round: Anand – Leko (remis) Naiditsch – Carlsen (remis) Alexejew – Mamedjarow (remis) Kramnik – Gelfand (remis) However it wont be borring

	i voted for Leko. The past year wasn`t his best, but in the canidate matches he really impressed. I think he is back and will win. Kramink was sick and i predict it will be thougt to win for him, however if he is 100% fit he is definitly the favorite. Anand of course will be under the best 3. However I bet my money on Leko.

	First impressions from today's games: Kramnik-Anand: Clearly, both sides played the opening fairly safely and Black equalised fairly easily. Kramnik and Anand played on, but there was never really much chance for either side to win. Carlsen-Leko: Leko made the draw look easy. Gelfand-Alexeev: This was interesting because I expected Gelfand to push harder as White in the first round. He played a quiet, trappy opening, but didn't get anything out of it, and the draw seemed to come almost without effort. I do like Gelfand's understanding of the game and his willingness to go down a pawn or two for the initiative. Mamedyarov is really 2758??? WOW! He certainly outclassed Naiditsch! I don't know whether Naiditsch is out of his league in this tournament or if Mamedyarov is as good as he looked here. He just picked up easy material and kept building his position. I have a feeling this is going to be a long stay in Dortmund for GM Naiditsch.

	Round 1 has the following pairings (all of which can be seen at Chessbase.com and many other sites): Vladimir Kramnik-Viswanathan Anand (WOW) Boris Gelfand - Evgeny Alexeev (or Alekseev) Shakhriyar Mamedyarov - Arkady Naidistch Magnus Carlsen - Peter Leko As ridiculous as it usually sounds, the first round may actually determine the winner this time! If there's a decisive result in the Kramnik game and the Carlsen game, the winners have excellent chances of 1-2 in the tournament!

	I voted for Kramnik because he is the WC, doesnt play 1. e4, beat Topalov and he is a chess god.

	Hi all, The summer chess season is upon us and once again Dortmund is holding a fascinating Super GM tournament! The favorites have to be Anand, Kramnik and Leko, but the other players are interesting. One of the rising stars in chess, Magnus Carlsen, will be playing, as will Boris Gelfand. To round out the group, Alexeev, Mamedyarov, and Naiditsch, all capable of scoring against the best players in the world, will make "easy" rounds not so easy. To make the tournament even harder for the favorites, it's only a single Round Robin, making the luck of the draw so much more powerful. And to add to the drama, Kramnik has been extremely ill yet has decided to play anyway. This is exactly the sort of tournament that Vishy Anand usually wins, but Carlsen would be an interesting darkhorse. Anyway, I have listed all the players and YOU get to choose your favorite for winning. My favorite player in the group is Kramnik, but I'm picking Anand based on the tournament parameters and his past success in similar tournaments.
