I'd be inclined to go for McDonald and Speelman's book - enthusiastic but objective

Yes, Tiger's modern is great fun to play. Bit suspect against the Austrian maybe, but well playable and if you're at a level where that's a big issue, you won't need books anyway  Wink. It's mostly based around replying to 1. e4 though.

I quite like Norwood's book on the Modern, if you like the Gurg system and an all round g6 repetoire. Maybe a bit dated, but it's not cutting edge theory lines anyway. The Gurg might not be to your tastes either.

Those who want to go by my perverse footsteps play such pawn structure with fuzzy atypical still strategic orientations

"Tiger's Modern" by Tiger Hillarp Persson
"The Modern Defence" by Keene & Botterill (for historical value)
"starting out : the pirc/modern" by Joe Gallagher

There are many more. If I had to choose only one for the desert Island than I'd plump for Tiger's Modern
