It's probably playable against experts and below, but isn't White at a disadvantage due to his turning a central pawn into a flank pawn?

This system gets no love- but my personal opinion is that it's somewhat under-rated. I used to play both it and the Bronstein-Larsen when I was a junior.

I can't think of any opening where black gets easier development. Every piece gets a nice, natural square. rooks on e8 and d8, Bd6, Qc7, Nd7-f8, and light squared b on e6, f5 or g4. Smooth development is the upside.

It depends what you are after in your black openings. I wouldn't reccomend for correspondence, but OTB, it's fine.

One line White should avoid is 6 Bc4, when 6...Qe7+ is annoying for White (7 Be2 takes the sting out of White's Bc4, while 7 Qe2 leads to a drawish ending)

I recall reading that Black has more counterplay in the lines with 5...gxf6, intending queenside castling and kingside play in many lines, but that the variation's soundness is open to question.

ECO B claims that White is slightly better in all lines after 5...ef6, so in general I wouldn't recommend this line to the ambitious Black player (although Caro-Kann exponents are not the most ambitious people around). Black should play 4...Nd7 instead if he wishes to play an early ...Nf6.

Can't White also play h4-h5 at some point to begin an attack on Black's castled king (...0-0) in the middlegame? Against the c3, Bd3, Qc2, etc setup, the b1-h7 battery often encourages the weakening ...g6, which can be exploited by h4-h5 and Bh6.

Yes, that is standard stuff.

Certainly not a very inspiring variation. I think MNb is right, Black is really only playing for two results. According to Gallagher, White scores 61% in the main line with 6 c3 and 7 Bd3.

This should be an inferior defence because of the damaged pawn structure. Having said this I must admit that it is extremely hard to prove something concrete for White. Early attempts to reach a favorable endgame (Qe2+) seem to backfire. Then again why should Black play a variation that is about as solid as and offers even less winning chances than the Petrov?
White's most ambitious setup is c3, Bd3. Qc2, Be3 (or was it Bf4 ?) preparing castling queenside.

Hello,

What do you think of the variation 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 de4 4.Ne4 Nf6 5.Nf6 ef6? It looks very solid to me, and White should only be able to obtain a small edge at best in my opinion. What is White's best line against it, and does Black need to know much theory to play it?

All useful contributions are appreciated Smiley.
