I love Chess Publishing!

Thank you, GM Gulubev, for sharing so much with us!  I know how painful it is to lose as an amateur, but for a professional to discuss your losses with such objectiveness is not only good for this website (and your journal site, which I visited), but for chess players who want to learn how to deal with defeat and learn from it.

I still prefer the White side of the KID, but I was a bit dismayed that such strong opposition decided to challenge you on the margins rather than in the main lines themselves.  I think that in itself is an endorsement of your book!

Again Drozdovskij defeated me in this line.  Undecided
I least I won two other KI games!

well, if I make (against Drozdovskij) a novelty, just a bad move instead of correct move which Kasparov made against Yusupov, then what? My KID is busted, OK!
Kasparov's KID is still fine... but he reveals next to nothing from his preparation. Smiley

I'd also not be foolish enough to judge an opening based one author's tournament in a tough field.

Well replied GM Golubev!
I consider your reply a King's indian defence.  Wink

I might add that it's unwise to judge opening variations entirely on the final results of the games.
On another thought I would rather read I opening book by an author who had wide practice against the very best, than from someone who hardly had any experience and put his database to work.

Ah, TopNotch, I am not falling for that.  Grin I have read enough of the Forum not to solely rely on stats to determine openings. I tend to over-intellectualise my choices in openings, "informed" decisions and allthat jazz. Hey, back in the fun days of teenagerhood, I was fascinated by the Modern and the fianchetto.  Wink I guess the stats on the Modern aren't that all good but I like it!

re BDG, heard about it a lot and read about it a lot on the Forum.  Smiley

Thanks for that other fact.

Dear all,

I started the thread because, being the novice that I am and a trivia/stats geek,  Cheesy  I thought it was interesting that the KID was "losing/lost" in 5 games. However, I wish to stress I did NOT mean to "attack" Golubev. I was just puzzled. Further, I overlooked two "facts" in my haste to post (hey! I am new and the pressure is there to post, eh? Wink), namely that, it was very short "rapid" games and I was unaware of the diff in elo ratings.

I am also of the opinion that Golubev's KID book is great and I intend to read  and play through it carefully. (Also, there was a typo in my earlier post: I meant to say, "a well-received book on the KID" and not "well-reviewed".) At this stage in my chess adventures, I am much appreciative of good opening books and good authors. I am definitely looking forward to Golubev's next book. This forum has been great in terms of its book reviews and recommendations. Much thanks.

Perhaps, my question should have been phrased thus: Is KID a good system for rapid play games?

You overlooked another fact, that being that Golubev is no longer an active player but moreso a journalist and author these days.

Regarding your other question I would say it depends largely on ones own abilities. However if you insist on a statistical basis as being the determinant factor of your opening choices, then you should seriously consider taking up the Blackmar Diemer Gambit.

I wonder if the Chessvibes comment was from Yge Visser (a Dutch GM who plays ...the KID).

When Radjabov wins with the KID does it follow that 1.d4 is busted?

Such a thing can happen to anyone, especially when they are the lowest-rated player in an all-play-all with such maneaters. I would like to second Markovich's observation about MG's book.

It is interesting though that someone like Drozdovskiy would play such a long-condemned line. I doubt that happened by accident.

By the way, Mikhail, what about the plans of writing a new dragon book?
There were some rumours in the dragon section, but no real information. For me this would be a MUST buy! And with Carlsen having taken up the dragon the market value of such a book should be greater than before!

Sorry for being off topic!

Thanks for so much attention to my play.  Etc., etc.

In any case, thank you for a most excellent book on the KID, many parts of which I have read with great interest, and which I look forward to finishing.  It expresses not only deep insight but also honesty and integrity.  It's quite something when one player illustrates so many important aspects of such a complex defense entirely from his own games.  I can't think of higher praise for this book than to say that it's on a par with Uhlmann's work on the French.
