Who is the author for GM 1.e4?

Jacob Aagaard.

Given how I like his Attacking Manuals, I think I will have to pick it up, but it is a real luxury because I will probably continue with the English.

Indeed, we don't want to learn theory like a long poem in school days, on the contrary, we're looking for decent theory chunk, but nothing more  Cool

Like with other repertoire books we are going to present a repertoire and not much more than that. There is enough material to deal with.

The emphasis will be on well-analyzed improvements. Most other theoretical works on the market are based on surprise or introduction, while they often will use phrases like: and here black has to find something. Well, if the author can use 10 pages on the line, he should also have found something. If he cannot, the reader is likely not to do so either and the 10 pages are dead weight.

Avrukh has found more than 100 improvements already and will undoubtedly find many more before finishing these books.

based on the link Mr Aagaard provided, Marin is making it a special point that transpositions and attempts to get out of a proper English will be covered. I am also looking forward to the book, even though I'm not really (yet?) a Marin fan. I think the English is undervalued and underexplored.

Hopefully they will address transposition issues from 1Nf3 in connection with the d4 repertoire too. According to an earlier message the emphasis there is on Catalan and g3 KI. I would not be surprised if more than half the players who aim for that repertoire start with Nf3, not 1d4. Many probably play the symmetrical English as well, over Benoni systems, so they may have to buy both the English and the d4 repertoires, making CP happy.

Well, you can still play the symmetrical English instead of Benoni systems after 1.d4.

Would be great if you don't, I can't imagine spending another 500 bucks on 10 books!

But Ruy Lopez against 1..e5, 3.Nc3 against the French, Open Sicilians...Jacob, you have your work cut out to keep your books to a reasonable size.  Smiley

Good morning, I am very interested in the English Opening edition of Grandmaster Repertoire.

I was wondering if this will be a complete repertoire book, covering everything (1..e6, 1...c6, Dutch, King's Indian etc), as in Kosten's Dynamic English, or will it be a partial one, just covering English specific lines (1.c4 c5, 1.c4 e5), like Pritchett's Play the English?

I agree that this should have been in the general chat area. Sorry, my mistake.

AM2 will be out in October if nothing goes wrong - with no mistakes in the typesetting.

I might not answer all questions and mean no offense thereby.

I have a good idea about doing updates to an opening book. I would recommend doing updates for all the opening books you publish. However I would recommend coming out with the first update 2 years after the book is written and only have the update available online (don't add it to the book). This allows enough time for enough people to buy the book, for enough theory to develop to make an update worthwhile, and people won't feel the need to buy the second edition because the updates are only available online.

.

To be honest, it sounds like a good idea but let's not forget Quality Chess is the only chess publishing company that offers free updates online. Aagaard is not obliged in the first place and is only doing it out of goodwill for all his readers.

It's good to note that you have toned down though.

Your question has already been answered in a previous post (see above).

Another question for Jacob, when is Attacking manual 2 coming?
I did like part 1 very much, the only critical thing I have is what already is mentioned here before, that "spine of the book" thing.

Aagaard,

Bless you for getting Marin to write a book on 1.c4; that is fantastic news.  He is a world-class writer and I cannot wait to read what he has to say about the English.  Brilliant!

Oh, by the way, whatever happened to that book on combinations?
I'm still hoping to see my "wonderful gem" published...

Anyway... best of luck,

Maybe I should elaborate?

1.d4 will be in two volumes. I cannot recall who it was who said that it will be impossible to do it all in one volume. Anyway, he was right.

The first volume will be out in November, I hope, and the second probably in January.

Yeah, it was me who was skeptical about the one volume. Two volumes sound more plausible. But we all know the Chess Stars series ballooned into far more books than originally intended.

Jacob - one small point regarding your Attacking Manual, which I raised in another thread here and have seen a couple of other people agree with, is that the print is too close to the spine of the book and it's slightly awkward to read.  In the spirit of constructive criticism I would offer this to you for consideration in future editions/publications.

This is correct. It is all my fault. I made a mistake and made it worse because I was late. I found it very amusing that someone wrote a review of Amazon saying that I need to find a better publisher!

Mr. A had some valid points and I hope he will keep them up in the future. On the other side I hope that he will stop misquoting Tony and learn to agree to disagree.

I don't know when I misquoted Tony. Can you tell me when I did this? The only thing I can think of that you are referring to is when I said that Tony belives that 8 Nd2 in the Ponziani is the refutation of the line Marin recommends. I think Tony does believe this. Recently he said that he doesn't think that the line Marin recommends is Blacks best line by any means.

Does it really matter?

I can recommend a good therapist if you think it does.

Unneccessary ad hominem. He was simply asking for clarification of a point already made by Aagaard. If it didn't matter, Aagaard wouldn't have brought it up in the first place, right?

Avrukh must be considered a bigger expert on the Catalan than Davies, so I guess his book will be more interesting for a high-level audience. Though of course Davies does get more pages to focus on the Catalan exclusively.

I don't want to have a solid system of updates. A few authors like to do them, most do not. I don't want to make it a part of the contract.

We will not necessarily limit ourselves to one repertoire against e4 or d4 with the GM repertoires.

I would recommend having a section of your website devoted completely to these updates to your opening books. I would recommend setting up a forum, like the one here on chesspublishing.com, where readers can give their ideas about what needs updating. This way I could have suggested that 8 Nd2 in the Ponziani and a few other things be included in the update of Marin's two books.

All right, I'll ask the obvious question:  what would "Aagaard"'s interest be in doing this?  Are you talking about selling all these updates online?

I would recommend having a section of your website devoted completely to these updates to your opening books. I would recommend setting up a forum, like the one here on chesspublishing.com, where readers can give their ideas about what needs updating. This way I could have suggested that 8 Nd2 in the Ponziani and a few other things be included in the update of Marin's two books.

No, I don't really care about this discussion anymore and I am done discussing it.

That should read GM Aagaard.

My friend, your honesty speaks well for you. Now let me make one thing clear. You have the full right to criticise anybody. It is not in the first place you criticising a GM that annoys us. It is the repetitiveness. So there are two simple rules to follow:

1. Limit your criticising to one thread - in this very case the Beating the Open Games one. Don't start two new ones and neither bring the subject up in a fourth one.
2. Even within that one and only thread it is not necessary to repeat your message a dozen times. We are not dumb you know and your message has come through. People will not change their opinion when they have to read your opinion for the zillionth time.

Ok, thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

No reason to back off a correct statement.  The only reason a chess culture exists in the US is because of all the foreign players here.  There is no true US Chess Culture.  People born and raised in the states, by and large, have little interest in chess.

Anyone threatened by this fact needs therapy.

The US even pretends many of their foreign players are actual Americans and always uses them in propaganda as if they are native sons/daughters.

True pathos.

This reminds me of a more specific comment Gregory Kaidanov made to me.  He related that in the USSR he had friends he studied chess with, but "here there is no culture of chess study."

The San Luis book!!! - forgive me I don't usually remember which book is from which publisher..

Please please please please Mr Aagaard continue cooperating with the team that wrote the San Luis book and share with us any information regarding that team in case they work on something new.. That book is the absolute best tournament book of all times, better than Zurich 1953..

With regard to the content I cannot say anything negative, rather I would like to thank you.  It's very entertaining.  I also like the Artur Yusupov book and am happy to own three or four other Quality Chess titles, the best of which is the outstanding San Luis 2005 book.

Please keep up the good work.  I think Gambit and Quality Chess are the best publishers on the whole at present, whilst Chess Stars produce superb work which is often pitched at a level above my own.  I've noticed a decline in the quality of Everyman books, in terms of production values at least, whilst Batsford seem rather haphazard in their output and style.

Well, this has all been a bit off topic, but I hope the new books are as good as they promise to be.  I'll be buying the 1c4 title.

Incidentally, Anonymous has to go.... Smiley

The Attacking Manual starts of like this: "I first started to work on this project back in 2001, when I was thinking about why I disagreed with one, and I stress one, of the ideas in John Watson’s monumental work Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy – Advances since Nimzowitsch."

This is the extent of the personal attack.

Can you disagree with one notion in a big work and still enjoy it. Maybe Silman, Anom and others cannot, but for me the answer is yes. But it does not matter how many times I say this, people still will not believe it. Sad, but what can you do?

I wrote one unfortunate thing in the book, that Americans has no chess culture. What I meant was that Americans have a different kind of chess culture without extensive state organised training of young talents

It was possible to read this out of the text, but could have been made clearer.

I voted yes, because Anom mixes relevant references and questions, like the one above, with hysteric abuse and incorrect quotations of Kosten and others. I think I should be in here to give information on our books and to listen to criticism that can make them better in the future. But at the moment I am heading for the door with the rest of you.

With regards what openings to play, I think the main argument weaker players have for playing sub-optimal lines is Tim McGrew's "dimensional analysis", i.e. increased chance of the opponent failing to find the best responses.  In that case the sub-optimal openings aren't really a handicap as there's at least as much chance of coming out of them with a good middlegame as with the objectively best lines.  Then, if these lines are considered 'fun', there's the chance of using the lines to bring more enjoyment en route to victory.

Obviously as playing strength increases, the scope for this declines.  I recall a book review discussing the issue of "what to do if I reach GM level and can't play a King's Gambit against Shirov", and whether that is a good argument for starting off with the Lopez right off- you can argue either way on that one.

On the subject of this thread, I say kick "Anonymous" out, and as for John Watson, while I don't always agree with what he says, his reputation as a fine author is well deserved, and he is fully entitled to express his views.

When you think about what Watson wrote about me and about other authors, you will know that this is a guy that throws stones and throws to kill. I personally do not mind, I like a bit of passion and brutal honesty, even if I at times disagree.

I disagree with one idea from Watson

I say that the other publishers are focusing on introductions and sidelines at the moment and probably will continue to do so as it makes financial sense, but underlines that I like ALL kinds of books. I deliberately never said anything negative about them, only that I want something else in the marketplace, and that it is thus my own responsibility to make it happen.

You don't know Why Jeremy wrote what he did? I'll explain it to you then! It's because he doesn't like you talking down to people and attacking them, especially when your arguments make a lot less sense!

You just said more negative things about Watson "this is a guy that throws stones and throws to kill". Why do you keep attacking John Watson?

You said you disagree with one idea from Watson? Watson said Your Excelling at Chess goes against his book almost 100%!

You never said anything bad about the other chess book publishers? Here is something you said in the BTOG discussions "most of the recommendations existing in other books are utter rubbish".

Aaggard, you like attacking other people, but you just can't handle it when you get a taste of your own medicine!

I just voted yes.

@Aagaard, You may be right that I have the flow of causation wrong between winning and having fun, but if so, I suspect that most other players do as well.  I thought that playing the Schliemann was great fun, but I never played it again once I perceived it to be unsound (so far I'm not sure what Radjabov is up to with it.)

P.S. I have several of your works, and as I have said in at least one other thread, I consider you to be one of the better chess authors currently writing.  I think quite highly of Watson as well.

Hello all,

To begin with, I'd like to say that although I rarely write, I do read quite a few of the postings in my attempts to become better at chess!  The opportunity to learn from many of the people on these boards is fantastic and I appreciate it.
The postings of anonymous have become a significant detractor from the value of the forum and I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could vote to have this lunatic censored.
If this guy can become censored, I do hope it is for all sections of the forum, and not just a subsection.  Upon inspection, you'll find that this guy is polluting the entire site, not just this section.
Let's get this lunatic out of here and enable us all to get back to discussing chess !

What???

Silman's review is by the way written against better knowledge. I had asked permission to mention these old things from Watson, through Silman, in advance. And all I wrote was that I disagreed with one idea. If you know this and reread Silman's review, it is actually rather hilarious. I must say I do not know his motives for writing what he did.

Why did I mention this again? Especially after the debate had turned sour back in 2001. Well, the Attacking Manual 1 is the elaborate answer to this debate.

When you think about what Watson wrote about me and about other authors, you will know that this is a guy that throws stones and throws to kill. I personally do not mind, I like a bit of passion and brutal honesty, even if I at times disagree.

So what do we have here?

I disagree with one idea from Watson, but ALWAYS make a point of saying that I love his books, which I do.
I admit that I cannot remember 1500 pages of theory.
Oh yeah, I also make a bit of fun at a guy who is continuously insulting me and our author, but still answer most of his questions.

I have a change of heart - Kick that sucker out.

Are you guys actually reading my posts or just automatically replying with some stupid comments? If you read my posts, you will see that they make a lot of sense, a lot more sense than Aagaard's posts make.

I have finally figured it out! Aaggard is not just mean to me, he is mean to everyone. That is just the kind of person he is. Here are some examples:

1.  In his book "Excelling at Chess" he says a lot of negative things about John Watson's excellent book Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy.

2. In his book "Attcking Manual 1" he again said negative things about Watson's Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy. Here is what Jeremy Silman said about Aagaard when he reviewed this book. "Aagaard's propensity to talk down to various players and writers is really something he should learn to avoid. No other author that I can think of does this kind of thing in an instructive book."

3. He also said a lot of negative things about the other chess book publishers even though they are better than Qualitychess.

4. He made up pathetic excuses about why Marin didn't use sources like Play the Open Games as Black for his 1...e5 books. One of those pathetic excuses was he said that Play the Open Games as Black is riddled with errors. In reality it isn't.

5.  Finally, he made up a lot of pathetic excuses about why certain things weren't covered by Marin in his Beating the Open Games 2nd Edition!

I remember playing an open Sicilian one day against a 2670 GM and the Kopec system the next day against a 2540 GM. They both worked fine, but probably would not have, had I reversed the use of them.

I think everything has its time and place. Like with Marin's books. What inspires one reader makes little sense to another. Not because they are good or bad, but because of the way the reader reads them. As long as a book connects with people it can be said to be good. When it connects with everyone it is usually bland Smiley.

I think the idea of always avoiding the main lines altogether is unhealthy, just as it is too much fun to try something off-beat not to do it from time to time as well.

I am not sure about this, but Markovich might have it the wrong way around. Winning leads to having fun less often than having fun leads to winning. At least, this is what I suspect. What does others think about this idea?

I feel the same way. I suppose it is what you want out of an opening book. There are a lot of erudite chess players out there who value exhaustive theoretical coverage and get unduly hung up over novelties. I suspect that because this is after all a chess opening forum, that it would attract a disproportionate number of them. What perplexes me is that these players are by and large not that strong. What i mean is that we are talking about non titled players mainly.

Personally I value a richly instructive opening text any time even it it if a little flawed, because i approach study of the opening as study of the complete game. But not everyone sees it that way. I suspect many don't realize how much they have yet to truly understand about the game and I suspect that for many opening theory itself is their hobby, and not just chess. Whatever, their reasons, they are entitled to it. To each his own.

Oooops I think there was a misunderstanding regarding main lines..  Of course, as Mnb says if you are an amateur that plays for fun, go for sidelines and weird stuff, I do the same..

I was mostly referring to young talent that wants to improve.. Those kids should play main lines and on more than one occasion I've ended up being in very bad terms with certain chess trainers that advice such youngsters to play sidelines.. Seeing a 13-year-old with 2250 rating playing 1.e4 c5, 2.b3 is very sad to me specially if this is the result of his coach's advice

There is more heat than light in some corners of this thread.

But I don't see how anyone can dispute that Quality Chess is one of the best chess publishers, and certainly a contender for the best.  The same could be said of Chess Stars, if the only criterion were the technical content; I don't know of a single modern work that could be compared along that dimension with Sakaev's monumental 7.Bc4 Gruenfeld tome; and many other Chess Stars works are similar.  With respect to the physical quality of the editions, the correctness of language, and other nontechnical considerations, Chess Stars really does not contend with Quality.  Personally I appreciate holding a good edition in my hand and reading well-constructed English sentences; but I also value strong and deep chess content.  For that matter, Quality has produced some very strong chess content as well.

Personally if I had to pick the best Chess Publisher, it would be Gambit.  I mean, just look at the breadth and depth of their list, and the quality of their editions.

Concerning what openings to play, I think that something is to be gained from tackling difficult systems for the sole purpose of learning more about the game.  But in general, I play what I think best enables me to win.  Winning is what this game is all about for me, and I think that most players are the same.  I can't imagine playing a suboptimal line for fun, because for me, losing, or giving a draw to someone that I should have beaten, is definitely not fun.

If Marin would offer his ideas in the Flank Openings Forum..........maybe..... Wink
Since June I`m working with his books (Beating the Open Games 2nd edition and A Spanish Opening Repertoire for Black) to build a new repertoire against 1.e4.  Huh
In my oppinion Emms (Play the Open Games as Black) and Johnsen/Johannessen (Ruy Lopez: A Guide for Black) are much better. Cheesy
Sorry, but sometimes Marin seems to be a man only looking back in chess history. So he should discuss his ideas with the buyers.

I certainly like the idea of doing reasonable coverage of a repertoire for one color in a few hundred pages.  I was hoping that one day Drazen Marovic would do something like a White version of his "An Active Repertoire for Black" -- but that book was less than 200 pages and used a format of about 120 succinctly-annotated complete games (two columns per page).

If you actually manage to make tons of money and give the people who you exploit a good salary I'd say you fully deserve it. Quality needs to be rewarded. If your competition with Chess Stars leads to excellent chess books (especially of both companies!), long live the competition!

You both are onesided. There is nothing wrong with amateurs studying and playing main lines, if they have the time and energy. And as Willempie always points out, a lot of main lines do not demand that more study than say the Morra Gambit. At the other hand, if someone is satisfied with playing 1.b3 his whole life, why not? We are amateurs you know, our income does not depend on our succes and neither is chess a matter of life or death.
So any amateur who wants to follow the steps of the absolute top, buy Khalifman's stuff and also GM Repertoire! Anyone who doesn't, because (s)he has other things to do, don't bother either.

Looking at 1.d4 it looks to be 300+ pages, but I disagree that the Catalan and g3 against the KID are main options for White. Actually, those are the ones I personally have feared most as Black with these openings over the years.

The situation in the chess publishing market right now is that Batsford, New in Chess, Everyman and latest also Gambit are focusing almost exclusively on tricks and surprises or learn the first few moves - books. Chess Stars are publishing 15 volume repertoires over years and years, which have their audience (I am one of them).

What we would like to do is to produce some high level opening books where a real effort goes into the books, rather than Fritz in 10 seconds in some sidelines no one believes in. Not that I have anything against the other books in the market, I just missed the traditional books where opening problems were attempted to be solved rather than avoided.

Question: Will the other publishers follow suit?

Answer: I would love if they would, but I don't think they want to. At the moment they have easy to produce titles with low printing costs and little need of editing. So why would they?

I do not agree and do not like what you said about the other book publishers! They do a great job, a lot better than Quality Chess is doing!

In my opinion, quality chess is one of the better publishers on the market...

I am somewhat skeptical at how you will succeed in fitting these "Grandmaster" repertoires into single volumes. These would have be be massive tomes. Although, I suppose the fact that you are not covering the most topical lines will cut down on the size somewhat.Still, I certainly look forward to these books.

Coverage for the white side of the g3 Kings' Indian alone would make the  1. d4 volume attractive. Btw, will Marin be advocating  the Catalan as well in his 1. c4 repertoire?

We must totally admit that publishing houses are pointing at the biggest customers: the amateurs who make 90-95% of all chess players.

If you write an opening book for Elo range 2100-2400 many reviewers will take care that no amateur buys your book, cause they will state something like this: "intended for stronger players so intermediate players should stick with xxx book..."

Every serious/tournament chess players should stand on the shoulders of giants. This means that there's is no overnight recipe how to obtain FM level or so (check out Yermolinksy's book).

As I have MaS degree I see no problem with a lot of work in any field of chess, the bigger problem is time which I don't have.

When one masters for example Khalifman's "Opening according to Anand/Kramnik" he or she has made a lifetime job in chess. Pure main lines are an guarantee of openin g success.

Since it's very hard and exaustive to write such a series of openings books, we can hardly see any competition in this field. So do not expect that all chess publishers employ such a task.

When on the start of big marathon you see all this crowded people you just can not resist imagining that they will all cross goal line. But they certainly won't.

Same is in chess. Many play chess, but only few cross 2600 mark, only the best 2700 mark.

I try to be the best, to give best what I can. Because of that I don't stick with crowd who awaits a book with 100 pages and with title "Unbeatable lifetime repertoire".

Aagaard go for the best, make Grandmaster repertoire the best opening series ever for high class players.

I think I have a cyber stalker!

But seriously, the other publishers are very much into starting out books and SOS books. This plays to their strengths and pleases a lot of people, so it is justified. It is not better or worse than what we want to do, just something completely different. What I dislike is that there is nothing dealing with the main lines out there, but it is of course not the fault of those who do something else, but the responsibility of the one who feels the lack. So we will try to do something about it.

And yes, we really do care, a lot, though at times things don't work out perfectly, of course. I hope that we at least succeed in publishing something interesting from time to time.

1.d4 and 1.c4 [and 1.e4] will be ONE volume each. This is where they differ from the Chess Stars series. I personally would never recall even a fraction 10+ volumes of theory, for example 70 pages worth of 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 c6 4.f4, as in the CS series. However, I think this is not their intention either.

Anyway, we are making something that makes sense to us - and hopefully others too.

I disagree with that to some extent. Even though I don't play most of the openings that Quality Chess has covered thus far, Tiger's book was very high quality, as were both of Vigorito's, Dearing's Grunfeld book, both of Marin's. I also own Attacking Manual one, which so far is quite good. It appears as though quality chess cares about their books. I for one think both the Chess Explained, Starting Out, and Dangerous Weapons are sub-par books. I too believe people too often look for the easy way out with openings. I enjoy the Chess Stars and Quality Chess books thoroughly because they have staying power, and great depth. The openings covered - Classical Nimzo, Bc4 Grunfeld, Semi-Slav are all openings for big boys. Chess Stars does the same thing - no backing down, and that's what I want from a book. I'm wicked excited for the 1. e4 books, even if I have to wait eons for them.

Aagaard,

How many volumes do you expect to publish in the 1. d4 and 1. c4 series respectively?

Playing mainlines as amateur is one of the most stupid things ever!
Playing Bg5 against the semislav, the bayonet attack or Bc4 in the Gruenfeld is suicide against better prepared players ...
and it is really one of the most stupid things to lose because of lack of opening knowledge ... the whole game was a waste of time then ...
Play good lines, but not too theoretical ..

and GM's frequently do not play mainlines btw ... Smiley
Kramnik played b3 against the semislav recently and won ...
Tiviakov won the european ch with the c3-sicilian ...
kamsky plays Bb5 against the Nc6 sicilian  ...

For Marin's 1 c4 book, make sure he uses the right sources this time! For his 1...e5 books, He didn't use sources that help you write a repertoire book like Play 1 e4 e5!, The Chess Advantage in Black and White, Play the Open Gamas as Black, chesspublishing.com, etc. His 1...e5 books would have been a lot better if he did. Instead he used sources like Akiba Rubinstien: Uncrowned King which don't help you write a repertoire book!

Is this project an attempt to compete with Chess Stars? I mean we already have those huge repertoire series "According to Anand", "According to Kramnik" etc. Now Quality releases their own mega series of "grandmaster repertoires", do we really need all these tomes to play decent chess after 1. e4 or 1. d4? Now can we expect Gambit, Everyman and Batsford roll out their own equivalents "Super-Duper repertoire based on 1. e4", "Ultimate Queens Pawn Mega Muscle Repertoire according to Batsford", ..... The whole gimmick is just a gigantic competition where the chess publishing houses are trying to out-glorify each other and make more money.

So what is wrong with that? It is a free market. If people like it, they will buy it, if they don't, they won't. I for one certainly welcome more choice.

Good luck!

I'd be interested to see you raise this on the 1.d4 d5 forum.  The Catalan strikes me as one of White's best chances for an advantage...

I see no point in a 1.Nf3 book. The way top players play it, it is to transpose to 1.d4 or 1.c4.

There will be books for Black as well, but later on. First White.

I'm just imaging how will Aagaard attack the Ruy Lopez.

And I forgot to ask, will be also repertoire books for Black?

We have Marin's vs 1.e4, and what about 1.d4, 1.Nf3 and 1.c4???

Here I can suggest Vigorito  Cheesy as he recently finished his book on Semi-Slav.

Incidentally, John Watson took four volumes to cover the English for Batsford in the '70s, but those weren't repertoire books.

The starting position is 1.c4. The cover is an early version. We will be reshooting the chess boards for all the covers.

There will be no "jumping where the fence is lowest" as a Danish idiom goes.

1.... Nf6
1.... e6
1.... c5
1.... e5
1.... g6
1.... c6

The bit about covering transpositions would seem to suggest that the starting point is 1. c4.  I mean, how many other openings can 1. c4 e5 transpose to?  (Okay, the KID, Old Indian and Modern are possible.)  There's also the fact that Marin did a CD on 1. c4 e5 a few years ago ...

I wonder if the starting point in the book by Marin will be 1.c4 (as indicated in the headline) or 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 (as the frontpage indicates!?)

Huh

Thanks kylemeister,

Well then is the right time for Grandmaster repertoire series to be published as hardback.

Let the history be repeated.

Classic opening books of the 1970s (complete with dust jackets -- though they published some softbound ones too), such as "The King's Indian Defence" by Barden, Hartston and Keene, "The Pirc Defence" by Keene and Botterill and "The Benoni" by Hartston.

I am not sure the Kasparov-series is my ideal for "look", but I appreciate that our layout needs to be great too.

But you have a bestseller chess book which will be tresured (like many from Quliaty), then it's the layout which gives final grade.

Best book should have best layout and a must is hardback.

Remember, hardback only.

Just like Kasparov "My great predecessors" series: a top notch layout quality with fine hardback.

That's the book.

So I will only be 975 euros out of pocket on that one Wink

The problem with hardback editions is actually that they are so expensive to transport.

Method one is not to cover full games - this cuts some space.

Method two is by having more pages.

Method three is to stop worrying about money, because this is not the way to riches, but it is a very inspiring challenge.

Well this is a news!!!!!!

Now you can't escape.

But Quality covered Open Sicilians in 200-300 pages, how will then your book look like, if we take into account:

1. Ruy Lopez
2. Winaver French
3. Full Caro Kann
4. Pirc/Modern
5. etc

Don't worry - cry!

I will do 1.e4. However, I know how big a task it will be, so I have not started to fantasize about publishing dates for that one!

And yes, it will be with the full swing taking on Najdorf and all the other bad boys.

I can see that it is not quite fair to put this in the 1.e4 section  Cool

The offer to play in Liverpool was simply too poor. I guess it is different if you are English and have more prizes to play for. I am not complaining about it, we have our own championship, it was just not attractive for me to play this time.

Thanks man, but what is with us  Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

I and my colleagues around the world are demanding 1.e4!!!

When  and who will take 1.e4 for us???????????????

I'm a bit disappointed.

Best move will be the last, even if it will published.

So here is what blurb says about first two volumes:

Tired of getting bad positions? Play the main lines!

Many guides suggest the smart choice in the opening is to rely on surprise. Play an unusual line: your opponent may never have seen it. The reality is that thousands of rational people play chess, and they generally try to play good moves, including in the opening. Thus, rare lines are rare for a reason. Look around the playing hall and tell me that the top players are merely dedicated followers of fashion. The main lines are the best chessplayers’ best guess at the best moves. The intelligent answer is to do the work, play the main lines, and reap the rewards.

Several volumes are in preparation. The first two cover 1.d4 and 1.c4:

I

Israeli GM Boris Avrukh charts a course towards an advantage with 1.d4. Avrukh is a world-class player who now explains the repertoire that elevated him to the top 50 in the world. The focus is on the main lines with a kingside fianchetto, such as the Catalan as used by Kramnik, and the g3-King’s Indian. Avrukh has consulted every relevant source and refuted much published analysis. Avrukh’s repertoire is not based on cheap tricks, it will last a lifetime.

II

GM Mihail Marin is arguably the world’s foremost chess author. He is an experienced exponent of the English Opening, and now shares his understanding of how to play this line. An English repertoire can be plagued by transpositions, and many previous authors have taken the easy way out, sidestepping the awkward moves by referring the reader to other manuals, but Marin supplies a complete repertoire that is strong enough for grandmaster competition.

I am not sure where I should put this, but as some of you have asked about this project in the Marin BTOG discussions, I put it here. I hope it is not imprudent.
