I am quite sure that 4... Nc6 is best (it's supported by statistics and  deep computer analysis it is also the reccomendation of IM Andrew Martin)

well further analysis has shown that you get a more or less drawn endgame, there are some shots for white still though

and pumi try the move, lol much less theory and quite practical! ( I never did like karpov, I believe 3..c5 is Botvinik's move)

ps: anyone has anything to say about my  original question? ( I recall there was quite a groundbreaking game by Carlsen againts kamsky in the main line sacing a pawn to open lines to the king)

I think BlkSabb has a good point; many CK sources prefer 4...e6 over 4...Nc6 - the Karpov/Podgaets book is quite clear in it's opinion that 4...Nc6 is 'weaker' despite being more popular.  Houska obviously agrees, and cites GM Arkell as another CK specialist who holds the same opinion.

I don't know which move performs best in terms of stats though; there are many transpositions between the two so I don't imagine it's easy to work this out.

Personally I'm new to the CK but enjoying my games so far, but am trying to decide whether to play 3...c5 (as I have been doing with average results) or take the plunge and get involved with the theory of 3...Bf5.  If I took the latter option I wonder if anyone here could make a comparison between the level of theory/sharpness involved with a CK rep featuring 3...Bf5 in response to the Advance and, of all things, the French?

Sorry if this is a little off topic (I'll start a new thread if there's much response) but the French would work for me as I play the Dutch to 1d4 and so 1...e6 appeals, but so far I prefer the Caro. I'm guessing there is still less theory in the CK however you play it than the French?

now there are many lines but I have not found any advantage (note that I am not saying this is the best line but it is curent theory as far as I know)

My analysis currently shows that the Bd2 line is superior to Bf4

I think 13.Ne4 is worth investigating - what is your recommendation for Black against this move?

Dear TGO,
It's good to see you working hard to find an advantage against the Caro-Kann, and thank you for sharing your efforts here. Four your personal satisfaction, do make sure to balance your computer analysis with your own and to enjoy OTB games, which can help relativize such strong views as "11. Bf4 is a draw". As for testing the potential of the immediate 11. Bd2, don't forget the straightforward plan of ...0-0 followed by ...c5, against which some strong (human) players find it hard to show an advantage, as in the following game (Pap - Czarnota, Avoine 2008) :

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 Nd7 8. h5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3 e6 11. Bd2 Ngf6 12. O-O-O Be7 13. Kb1 O-O 14. Ne4 c5 15. dxc5 Nxc5 16. Nxf6+ Bxf6 17. Qxd8 Rfxd8 18. Be3 Na4 19. Bd4 Bxd4 20. Rxd4 Rxd4 1/2-1/2

Can anybody strenghthen this 11. Bd2 line for White ?

It might be useful to know that the 3...c5 system is undergoing a period of rapid development and even recent books are already out of date.

At IM/GM level the line has been receiving a severe examination and White has been scoring 60% (based on 120 games in 2007-8 where both players were rated over 2400).

A similar survey of 3...Bf5 shows White scoring 56% based on 175 games played in 2007-8.

Of course these are both small samples statistically, but it is clear that
a) 3...c5 is no longer (if it ever was) an easy option compared to 3...Bf5;
b) anyone wanting to play 3...c5 at a decent level has some regular homework to do to stay up to date.

this might have been what I was looking for in the 3...c5 line thank you!

my analysis currently shows that 11. Bf4 is drawn (white can't get any advantage with current theory, and as far as I know top games show this trend also)

11. Bd2 seems to have much more potential so I am switching to that.

my other question is about this line:

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5!?

I have always used 3...c5  in my over the board games but this is the line that has been giving me trouble lately:

4. dxc5 Nc6 5. Bb5 e6 6. Be3 Nge7 7. c3! Nf5 8. Bd4! Bd7 9. Bxc6! Bxc6 10. Nf3 Be7 11. 0-0  and now I am not really sure what to do (b6, 0-0, Qc7 are the options) It looks like I am just headed for a pawn down ending that I am likely to lose!

any suggestions where to improve on my line? (and which of the 3 moves to play if this is really the best line)

ps: as far as I know the line 3...c5 has not been refuted but am I wrong?

Regards, TGO  Smiley

Hi,
Wells said in his book that instead of 10...Le7 it is good to play 10...a5!- there was a recent game Karjakin-Asrian, where Black obtained enough compensation to draw the game(1/2-53).

You should play 4...e6.  4...Nc6 is considered inferior from what I've seen.

If you pick up Houska's book you will have everything you need for the Black side of the line.  There is really great stuff on the Advance in this book.

I play it from the White side and I don't know how to get an advantage against the lines Houska recommends.

3..c5 isn't refuted.

But I hate the move. I still play Karpov's plan with 3..Bf5 with good results.

I am a regular caro kann player and have explored this opening's theory quite well. But always frow the black side, lately when I was playing in the engine room at playchess and done analysis with Rybka 3 I have been trying to prove some kind of advantage for white in the main lines but there just does not seem to be any!

the main Bf4 capablanca line seems to be completly drawn or even slightly better for black (which I like from a caro kann player's perspective, but would like to find some advantage if there is any to be found)

initial analysis looked like the main line has no advantage for white :

1. e4  c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4 h6 7. Nf3 Nd7 8. h5 Bh7 9. Bd3 Bxd3 10. Qxd3 e6 11. Bf4 Qa5+ 12. Bd2 Bb4 13. c3 Be7 14. c4 Qc7 15. O-O-O Ngf6 16. Kb1 O-O

now there are many lines but I have not found any advantage (note that I am not saying this is the best line but it is curent theory as far as I know)

My analysis currently shows that the Bd2 line is superior to Bf4

my question is could it be that theory is wrong in these lines? And what is the best hope for an advantage? (my results seem to show that white can't hope for any advantage and that Bd2 is best (e5 can also be played but I don't like those positions so I trying to find something here)
