I like playing the Falkbeer with 1.e4 e5 2. f4 d5 3. exd5 c6.
Don't know much about it's reputation, but it seems to take many players by surprise and gives black an active position.

1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf 3.Bc4 Nc6 4.Nf3 Bc5 5.d4 Nxd4 5. Nxd4 Qxh4 has scored very well in correspondence.

My preference as Black as regards the Kings Gumboot a part from taking the pawn is to play 'The Aderlaide Counter Gambit' of which I have had reason sucess. I have tried Buckers 'Nordwalder Variation' less sucessfully though. I seem to have trouble untying ones peices Undecided I also like 1.e4 e5 2.f4 h5 with the intention of 3.Nf3 exf4 and the Wagnebach (or how ever you spell it)

Since Thomas Johansson's excellent book most white players know that this can be avoided with 3.Nc3 and that is what I would play.

In newspaper journalism, titles of articles are usually capped. That is first.

Second, 1 e4 e5 2 f4 a5 does not strike me as efficient.

Theird, 1 e4 e5 2 f4 Bc5 followed by 3...f5 looks wild, wacky and interesting.

I seriously doubt that the Falkbeer is likely to surprise, or even mildly unsettle, any serious 2.f4 players.  White can eat this for lunch.  But 2...Qh4+ 3.g3 Qe7 could be unsettling.

Black sacs a pawn based on the consideration that he has played three moves that help his development (he's opened diagonals for both bishops and has developed one of the bishops), whereas White has made just two moves that help his immediate development (opened one bishop's diagonal and developed a knight) while at the same time White has weakened his king's position.

THESE SUGGESTED COUNTERS RATHER LOOK TAME - I AM DISSAPPOINTED FROM MR. GAMBIT. I EXPECT SOME WEIRD PAWN SHOTS IMMEDIATELY. (SOMETHING LIKE 2...A5 TO INCREASE THE PRESSURE ON THE QUEENSIDE)

AND HOW DOES IT FEEL TO READ ALL IN "CAPS"?  Wink

As Davidflude pointed out, 2...Nc6 3.Nf3 f5 is a good practical choice because White has to play very precisely to keep an edge. 

I don't see how Black obtains sufficient compensation after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 g5 3.fe5; compared to the Englund Gambit, White can protect his extra e5-pawn with d4 and the f5 and h5 squares are irrepairably weak.

2...f5 was covered by Kasparov in 'My Great Predecessors' and evaluated it as better for White. However, an improved version of this for Black is 2...ef4 3.Nf3 f5, when taking on f5 promises not much of an advantage, so strongest is the piece sacrifice 4.e5 g5 5.d4 g4 6.Bf4! gf3 7.Qf3 when admittedly it is White who has most of the fun hacking Black's king. 

I don't know much about the King's Gambit, but I think 2...ef4 3.Bc4 Nc6 leads to some very interesting positions and has a stable theoretical reputation.
