Interesting , i dont face the Aljechin often as white , but 3.Nc3 looks like a nice offbeat line imo , ok , i won easily after 3..Nb6 :

I like 3... Nxc3 4.bxc3  ( 4.dxc3 is tricky and needs attention from black  ) d6 ( d5 5.La3 ) too :

Well, I am no one to argue with a FIDE 2500+.  Nice to see you here, Marc.

Imho Black should play 4...d6 5.Nf3 dxe5 6.Qxd8+ Kxd8 7.Nxe5 Ke8.  Black is way behind in development, but White has trouble finding anything to do, and eventually Black can hope for an excellent ending.  It's going to be a long game, but so what?

I played this line as white long ago and got the impression that white is active enough after 8.Be3 (idea 0-0-0, Be2); the Ne5 goes to c4 (and sometimes later to a5) any time it is attacked, with a slight iniciative.
I personally prefer and would recommend anybody 4...d5 to 4...d6 for black in this line (and also against 4.bxc3 btw)

I haven't looked seriously at these lines for a long time, but in the 3.Nc3 Nxc3 4.dxc3 line I used to have excellent results by playing 4...d5. The model game was really Adams - Agdestein (I think that game is in Cox book - and white won, butt hat had more to do with Admas being very clever than the position) but in general the plan of playing Bf5, e6, c6 or c5, Qa5, c5-c4 and storm against the white queenside with the b-pawnwas very effective - especially when the Bishop was allowed to remain dominating the diagonal h7-b1. Probably white has found more clever ways since then - but if not I'd prefer this kind of double-edged middlegame to the ending described after d6 - without having any serious opinion on the acutal merit of that line and how it compares to the line with 4...d5.

The chase variation is the line I dislike most as black, whether it's objectively equal or not.
Have to agree with the comments about Davies' books, some pretty bizarre choices at times, and avoidance of any lines which might require some real homework to make playable.

I had the same thought about the Chase variation. At least there are some lines there where white does actually gambit a pawn  Smiley

I had a strange game where my opponent met 4...d6 with 5.exd6.  I played 5...Qxd6, and when my opponent declined to exchange queens on d6, I eventually reached a favorable endgame.

Parenthetically, I would think a so-called Gambiteer would play the Chase Variation.  Most likely Davies didn't want to delve into its complexities.  But that line also would be unlikely to produce an advantage against a well-prepared opponent.

I haven't seen the Gambiteer book but presumably in it Davies suggests meeting the line given by Markovich with 8.Bb5+ as he does in his Alekhine book. This whole line seems an odd choice for a "Gambiteer" as provided black finds the accurate 8...Bd7 9.Nxd7 Nxd7, I think white has almost nothing here. Perhaps he could claim the two bishops are worth something, but it seems pretty thin to me especially because that kingside pawn majority must count for something in the long term (as suggested by Markovich). Given that I play the Spanish Exchange with white, I would prefer to be sitting behind the black pieces here.

1. Was recommended in Gambiteer I, Davies' somewhat mixed repertoire book.

Alekhine 3.Nc3

Recently I have tried to get back into OTB chess. One of my games (with me as black) began  1.e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. Nc3 Nxc3 4.dxc3

This didn't strike me as odd at the time as I have always felt this line was a slightly obscure but good choice that one could play effectively without knowing a lot of theory - perfect for meeting a comparatively rare opening like the Alekhine at amateur level (my opponent was USCF 2200).

I do however play a lot of blitz on FICS and over the last month or so I have suddenly started encountering this line a lot more often than before. In particular, while previously 4.bxc3 was about equally common, every recent game has gone 4.dxc3.

So two questions...

1. Was this recently recommended somewhere or is it just a statistical fluke that I am encountering it so often?

2. What do the Alekhine fans here think is black's best approach after 4. dxc3 ? I played 4...d5 in the OTB game but wasn't thrilled by my position.
