If people dont like Dylan fine thats their choice, but its strange to try and say Dylan fans are stupid and the like. I think Joan Baez said it before - you can take it or leave it, but for those who do choose to take it his music goes way deep.

There's a phenomenon I met nearly 40 years ago and this topic showed me it's still alive (see Taljechin posts): "Dylanology". Intelligent people forgetting everything else and defending the master against everything smelling like a doubt even if it comes from the master himself. The Rolling Stone had some interviews with Bob Dylan and if you like to do some research you'll find clearcut words of Mr. Zimmermann himself about those admirerers.  Grin

Intelligent people wouldn't declare an artist useless based only on his ability to play the nose flute or some other minor instrument. See Jupp53's earlier posts.  Grin

Btw, it's a pity Juppie and MNb don't live in Taiwan! Grin

I'm under 50 too, know Dylan's music for more than 30 years and think it as boring as I did then. Taljechin's last link did not give me any reason to change my opinion - a 3½ minute yawnfest.

You don't have to look far to see this confirmed:

criticism from someone with such a bad taste in music

writes somebody who is not able to recognize a melody in Shostakovitch' music. Yeah, right.
At the other hand this insult gave me a good laugh, good enough to break my promise to remain silent.  Wink Therefor the apology is not accepted:

Hasn't been mentioned yet: Anthony and the Johnsons , Knocking on Heaven's Door

Antony has some fantastic covers; this is my favourite: Candy Says, with Lou Reed

If you want good combination of music and text (and if you speak Spanish) take a look at some of the older Salsa. That is often poetry on music.

Or if you speak French, Jacques Brel.

I've heard it all now - is someone actually trying to claim Bob Dylan is not a good musician? Tut tut. No comment necessary. His music is still fresh to this day, a legend and a genius.

If you are over fifty Wink
Personally I had never heard of the guy before I was twenty. And I must say that after that I dont feel it has added muchh to my "music experiences".
I can't comment on his musical qualities, but I just dont like it. His texts are imo heavily overrated. Just compare it with your average anthem. If you want good combination of music and text (and if you speak Spanish) take a look at some of the older Salsa. That is often poetry on music.

I've seen a few online discussions of Dylan after his birthday - they often get strangely heated. Some people worship him and some people don't get him at all.

I hear again and again that he's a genius, the greatest of our time etc. often followed by some insult to those who are "immature" or "demented" or "not knowledgeable" enough to disagree. I even saw someone admit that Dylan is an OK but not outstanding singer, not that good a guitarist, and his lyrics are great as rock goes but not really Nobel Prize material. And still, he said, the totally of it was pure genius! Some of the fans behave almost like a religious sect - they just know they're right and deem everyone who disagrees crazy, yet they can't argue logically for their views.

So if anybody is willing to try - what exactly is it that makes him a genius and/or the greatest singer/songwriter ever?

(Don't get me wrong, I like many of Dylan's songs and I can tolerate his singing just fine, but I don't get why he's so much greater than, say, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits or Bruce Springsteen.)

Indeed. Bob's technical prowess (or otherwise) as a musician is completely beside the point. It's not about technique. If it was then Phil Ochs, who was a much better singer and guitarist, would have been much bigger than Bob. But he wasn't.

Sorry, I must have been in a bad mood that day...

It's now so clear to me that there can only be two ways to measure the ability of a singer-songwriter: how well he/she master the nose flute and Tibetan throat singing. :)

No, we don't have an ignore button. You could try ignoring any obnoxious posts the old-fashioned way.
