I am actually a singer with a good ear for music - you can check me out on youtube.com  - type Doug Pinson...that's me.  So to say I'm not listening is objective.  I am listening - his singing makes me crawl.  That is not the real word I wanted to use, but I want to be respectful.  Nothing lewd, but I cannot stand his singing style.  But others appreciate his singing, and I appreciate that.  I will never knock someone else for liking his singing.  It is a personal preference.  But I have told people before I would rather have my teeth drilled without novocaine than sit and listen to him sing for an hour.  It is nauseating to me, literally.
There is one song I did listen to and liked and he was singing on it - I think it was "Liberty" or something along those lines, basic blues, and it was on a "Touched by an Angel" or "City of Angels" soundtrack, I believe.  I did like that one.

Bob Dylan's singing literally makes me crawl.  He has a terrible voice, but he does have a gift for writing, and when others perform his songs, I can appreciate them more.  Not when he does them.  I will give 100% to Dylan for the songs that he wrote - just don't like it when he sings them.  It isn't about manhood - it's about sanity!   Cheesy

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose, but I must admit I'm firmly in TalJechin's camp that very few covers actually improve upon the original (Dylan stopped playing an acoustic version of "All Along the Watchtower" after he heard Hendrix's cover, so maybe that's one).

Can't sing?  I disagree and would submit you're not listening.  My point of comparison in the past has always been "I Want You."  Go listen to any number of covers of that song, performed by people who emote with "beautiful" voices.  Dylan's recording blows them out of the water.

The Jim James/Calexico cover of "Goin' to Acapulco" is especially haunting (one of the better recent covers in my books).  And I'll love anything Johnny Cash records—"Mama You Been On My Mind" included—but it doesn't compare to some of the live duets between Dylan and Baez, which have just the right frantic tone about them.  Some of the material from Masked and Anonymous wasn't bad, either.

Some people have actually added some of their fav covers of Bob. Smiley

Here's a couple of them that I really liked, Calexico's version of Goin' To Acapulco from 'I'm Not There' was one I'd forgotten about completely since seeing the film - maybe because I hadn't heard the original...

Are there any others here that also use Spotify? Sadly, Bob seems to have removed most of his originals from their database - but there are a lot of covers available.

Anyway, I created this collaborative playlist for good Dylan covers - so those with spotify can add to it Smiley

I added

3x Don't Think Twice, It's All Right - by José Feliciano, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash

One Too Many Mornings - Totta Näslund

Mr Tambourine Man - Band, The World (not sure the info is right though - sounds like the Byrd's version to me, but I'm probably wrong...)

and a swedish 'translation' of One Too Many Mornings that I stumbled upon in the search list. Mitt inre är i uppror av Dan Tillberg, som tydligen gjort en hel skiva med dylantolkningar.
Anyway, it's not a bad effort from an artist virtually no one remembers anymore..

And finally Cash's version of Mama, You've Been On My Mind

Feel free to add more good Dylan covers! Smiley

In my opinion, Bob's original is always the best version. Even himself can't improve later on. Especially his early albums, before he found god, are almost all on my personal list of Perfect Albums.

And almost all of his later albums contain at least one or two songs that made it worth buying - though I'm not all that fond of his blues inspired last few albums...

However, Bob has done some good versions of other's songs that one sometimes just happen to find by accident, for example: My Blue Eyed Jane (on a Tribute to Jimmie Rodgers) and  I Can't Get You Off Of My Mind (on A Tribute to Hank Williams)

I don't fall in either category, because the music of Bob Dylan (I hardly ever pay attention to the lyrics) leaves me completely indifferent. When a song of his is covered it always strikes me how trivial his melodies are, with Blowing in the Wind as a typical example. All his other songs I have heard (quite a few) go ear in ear out, like muzak.
I don't know even more than two titles. So no favourites.

Dylan sings his songs with such passion and originality and soul

I won't contradict this except that Dylan doesn't sing - he sort of mumbles and growls on three different pitches. To make sure I just checked the content of my underpants. Everything is allright. My thanks to Black Sabbath for worrying.
It is intriguing to see how the two previous fans react on criticism. From the last one I don't doubt it is a matter of projection, given the usual way he reacts on my posts and given the few amount of chess moves they content.

You are contradicting it. His singing on Blood on the Tracks, in my opinion his best album, is emotional and telling, but even someone like you might appreciate his original version of Girl of the North Country. And while we're on the subject his Nashville Skyline album, whatever you think subjectively about his singing, features the exact opposite of what you're complaining about.

That sounds a bit fundamentalist, at least if it's a matter of principle... If it's simply empirical experience, then fine.

As an apropos I'm a big fan of Leonard Cohen myself, but even so I concede that a few of his songs have been done better by other artists, for example Joan of Arc and maybe Coming Back to You both with Jennifer Warnes.

My favorite Dylan cover at the moment is probably Manfred Mann's version of With God on our Side.

it's simply empirical experience and valid for Bob only! Smiley
