LOL! Sometimes beating the Scandinavian means transposing into lines your opponent knows nothing about. Okay, how about the Kortc Gambit, 1 e4 d5 2 ed5 Qxd5 3 Nc3 Qa5  4 b4! ?

1 e4 d5 and now:

2 d4! dxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 f3 transposing to the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit; 4 Bg5 is the Von Popiel Gambit;

2 g4! transposing to the Zilbermints Gambit in the Grob.
After 2...dxe4 3 Nc3! Black is out of the book and the Scandinavian Defence.

2 Nf3! and after 2...dxe4 3 Ng5 we have the Tennison Gambit.

2 Nc3 offers the Van Geet/Sleipner Opening. The usual line is 1 Nc3 d5 2 e4, which transposes.

2 h3!? dxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Nge2 offers the Zilbermints Gambit, colors reversed. Similarly, 4 Qe2 offers the Englund Gambit, colors reversed. Here there might be an edge on the regular Englund, since White can play g4 - Bg2, pressuring the e4-pawn.

All told, you can steer the game away from the Scandinavian Defence and into uncharted territory.

Thanks.

The Nf3 to go for a d4-c4 centre is interesting. I thought one way to deal with it is play Qa5 if i remember correctly.

I also saw some g3 systems vs the Qd6 system. So you can play Bf4 with tempo and Bg2 together with a b4-b5 plan is kinda interesting.

Greets book doesnt seem to coming out before december according to this site: http://www.everymanchess.com/chess/books/Beating_Unusual_Chess_Defences%3A_1_e4%...

Also, do you mean 'opening for white according to anand' by khalifmans book?

TN's line is used in Emms' "Attacking with 1 e4", which I like a lot and have used as a baseline before moving on to more theoretical systems.

The main line is good, yes, but the following sidelines are also quite good!

1.e4 d5 2.ed5 Nf6 3.Bb5 Bd7 4.Be2 Nd5 5.d4: Easy to learn, easy to play, and still offers good chances of an advantage. Your next moves will usually be Nf3, 0-0, c4 and Nc3, with your queen's bishop on e3 or f4 depending on the position. Black's extra move ...Bd7 hurts Black because he does not obtain his usual pressure against the d4-pawn, and not surprisingly Black's main move is to return the extra tempo immediately with ...Bf5. Then remember to play a3 before c4 to avoid ...Nb4. White gains a slight advantage against all of Black's replies, and below 2100 your opponents will mostly play passively with ...e6/...c6 which is not effective at all here.

1.e4 d5 2.ed5 Qd5 3.Nf3: I admit, this probably isn't as good as 3.Nc3, but some very strong players are playing it and it fits in well with 3.Bb5 (White's idea is the same: Be2, d4, c4, 0-0, Nc3 in some order). The critical line is 3...Bg4 4.Be2 Nc6 5.d4 0-0-0 6.c4 or 6.Be3. Make sure you know some theory before heading into these lines of course. Against moves other than ...Nc6/...Bg4 you can usually play d4 and c4 quickly, but make sure you avoid 3...Bf5 4.d4? Qe4 when Black is already better.

All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them.

Khalifman's book deals with the main line from White's side quite well. Also isn't Greet that writes a book now for the White's side of some defences like the Modern, Scanndinavian etc?

Just play the main line. Travelling the main road is the wisest thing to do. It is called the main line because most of the people believe that this represents best play.

How to meet the scandinavian

I have a lot of troubles in meeting the scandinavian. I dont know how to meet the solid c6-e6 wall of black. I simply have no plans, dont know where to put my pieces and what to do with my pawns. So i was looking for some books on the scandinavian. But most seem to cover only the black perspective. I want to have a book that at least cover both 3...Qa5, 3...Qd6 and preferably also 2...Nf6. And it has to give some plans for white as well.

I saw three books about the scandinavian that doesnt seem to be totally written for the black perspective:
- The Scandinavian Defence - James Plaskett
- The Scandinavian, 2nd - John Emms
- Starting Out: The Scandinavian - Jovanka Houska

I was wondering which book will give me the most ideas for the white side so i can improve my scandinavian. And i hope c6-e6 walls (which might arise from caro-kan and french) in general.
