But white can also play 5.Nbd2, and after later Bxf3 take back with the knight and put the bishop on d3 with a pleasant game in my opinion.

White can simply play 5.Be2 e6 6.0-0 and count on a nice advantage due to his extra tempi and space.

But before that I would play 5...Bxf3 6.Bf3 (6.gxf3?!) and the white bishop on f3 looks more than stupid to me and is just staring into a stonewall of pawns. The strategic point is that the knights is better than the bishops in closed positions like this.

I just want to be clear: Are you arguing that 1.e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 Bg4?!/? is better than 4...e6? Or are you merely suggesting that Black can survive the opening?

There's a variation that is at least somewhat topical now that is similar:

1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5!? 4.dc5 Nc6 5.Nf3 Bg4.

The problem is that while c7-c6-c5 isn't terribly efficient at least it combats the center directly.

After 3...Bf5 4.Nf3 Bg4?!/? White can simply play 5.Be2 e6 6.0-0 and count on a nice advantage due to his extra tempi and space. As any player of the White side of the French can attest, there are plenty of ways to attack Black's pawn structure. "Rock solid" can still be dynamited.

I believe the onus is on Black to come up with a plan of development after White's 6.0-0.

A "new" variation against the Short system.

I have started to use a "new" setup against the Short system. It may look really silly but I have "got away" with it so far when I have played it. Black loses a tempo in this set up but I have my doubts that white can take advantage of that as the nature of the position is so closed. Remember that I am also content with a draw as black in general. The opening moves goes as follows :

1.e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 Bg4!?   It looks silly and my idea is to trade off the bishop for the knight on f3, play e6 and go for  a rock solid game with the endgame in sight. The game takes a french carachter after this move.A tip : Test it before you condemn it.
