How?

Is that a blunt question or a blunt expression of puzzlement?

I have played the 3. ... Ne4 4. Nce2 line as black quite a lot but with dismal results.

As a result I have tried 2Nc3 as white but then invariably get 2..e5 (as sensibly recommended by Cox et al)  and a dull f4 Vienna if they don't fall into the d3 Qh4+ line.

Now I just take my chances in the main line  Smiley

Thanks for the comment. I usually play the modern vs. Alekhine and another line vs. the French, but decided to look at 2Ns as an alternative to the French, seem to like it and thought to also put a little extra effort to make it an alternative vs. the Alekhine, too.

So in that light, reaching an equal position is not a problem...  Wink

IMO the line with 2...d5 3.e5 d4 is just fine for black (equal).
Don't believe the hype in some books about white superiority, mainly built around a few games by Hector.
Just an example out of many: 4.ef6 dc3 5.fg7 cd2+ 6.Bxd2 Bxg7 7.Qf3 (this is supposed to be the problem, or not?) Nc6 8.Bb5 0-0! 9.Bxc6 bc6 10.Bc3 Qd5 with an absolutely level position.
The other Hector idea (1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e5 Nfd7 4.e6!?) is certainly more dangerous, but even there Black can hold the balance, provided that he is careful and returns the pawn at the right moment.

I have considered playing the following transposition:

1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e5 Nfd7 4. d4 c5 5. Nf3 e6 which is a tabiya I was examining via French 2 Knights.

But have no clue what to look at when employing it via Alekhine. Is it 3. ... Ne4 4. Nce2 or 5. ... Nc6 6. Nxd5 worth looking into?

Would like some quick guidance and I will check the rest (need to employ this in the very near future Wink )

You have to be prepared for deviations. My choices:
1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 e5 (Vienna) - you have to be prepared for this, too..
1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e5 d4!? 4. exf6 dxc3 5. fxg7 cxd2 6. Qxd2 Qxd2 7. Bxd2 Bxg7 8. O-O-O
1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e5 Ne4!? 4. Qf3 Nxc3 5. dxc3
1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e5 Nfd7 4. d4 Nb6!? 5. Nge2
1. e4 Nf6 2. Nc3 d5 3. e5 Nfd7 4. d4 Nc6!? 5. Nge2 Nb6 6. Nf4 Bf5 7. g4 Bd7
