I don't play the variation with either color, but I had the impression that 16.b3 is more highly regarded than 16.Ra2 precicely because of that move (17...Bxe3).

Well the difference between the two moves seems to come down on the difference between the following two diagrams:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

In the first diagram Black is forced to take with the Bishop since after 20. ... Nxf5? 21. Nxf5 both 21. ... Bxf5 22. Qd5 Ra8 23. Rfa1 and 21. ... Rxf5 22. Qd5 Bd7 23. Raa1 Rf6 24. Qxa5 lose a pawn.

I just started to have a look at The Easiest Sicilian, and this is the line that they recommend for Black in Part 4, if I have gotten the variations right. However, they fail to mention 25 Ke2! It really seems like this refutes the whole 17 ...g6-variation. If you still like to get a playable game, but not 17 ...Bxe3 (as pointed out, this leaves practically no winning chances for Black), what do you recommend, deviating early with e.g. 12 ...Rb8, or earlier? Or is 15 ...Bd7 maybe the way to go?

Or what about FrankieJay's suggestion of Gutman's 18 ...Be6 (should it really be on move 18, after ...g6? EDIT: I guess you meant 17 ...Be6, which has been annotated here at Chesspub in Nepo-Zhigalko, 2005)?

This seems to be the truth.

By the way, Esserman annotated the game here: http://usclnews.blogspot.com/2011/11/im-marc-esserman-unconditionally.html

Outside of the typical non-sensical ranting associated with his annotation style, it looks like he had this pretty well figured out.

Is this line really that critical for the whole Sveshnikov?  There are plenty of other choices on move 11 & 12.

In correspondence chess, 25.Ke2 was first played 2005 and since then White won 18 of 19 games.

Since these days, the status whole variation after 17....g6 is completely lost, if you consider corrchess. 17....Lxe3 seems to be fully playable.

Shocked - it seems cc is lightyears ahead in opening theory!? But as you mentioned, due to 17. ...Bxe3 the sveshnikov is still alive. What about the other sicilians, the dragon, najdorf, taimanov - in which shape are these systems?

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

Also of note is the move 18...Be6 which was played by Gutman this year in a rapid game. The game isn't of high quality, so I won't post it here but the move looks alright and doesn't lead to all the forcing lines of g6 or the lack of winning chances with Bxe3.

The only relatively high-level game I've found in the variation this year with 17...Bxe3 is the following:

[Event "75th ch-BUL"]
[Site "Bankya BUL"]
[Date "2011.04.13"]
[Round "3.6"]
[White "Ninov, N."]
[Black "Spasov, V."]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[ECO "B33"]
[WhiteElo "2543"]
[BlackElo "2590"]
[PlyCount "62"]
[EventDate "2011.04.11"]

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Bg5 a6 8.
Na3 b5 9. Nd5 Be7 10. Bxf6 Bxf6 11. c3 O-O 12. Nc2 Bg5 13. a4 bxa4 14. Rxa4 a5
15. Bc4 Rb8 16. Ra2 Kh8 17. Nce3 Bxe3 18. Nxe3 Ne7 19. O-O f5 20. exf5 Nxf5 21.
Nxf5 Bxf5 22. b3 Be4 23. Bd5 Bxd5 24. Qxd5 Qc7 25. Qxa5 Qxa5 26. Rxa5 Rxb3 27.
Rd5 Rf6 28. Rfd1 Kg8 29. f3 Rxc3 30. Rxd6 Rxd6 31. Rxd6 Kf7 1/2-1/2

This looks like a fully acceptable way for black to play for a draw. Perhaps there is redemption here yet!

What about 17. Nce3 Be3!? --- what´s the latest in this line?

I don't know what's the latest there. I may have to look into it, as this looks to be a nail in the coffin of 17...g6.

I'd like to play this line with white but, what do you play against black early Rb8 or Bg5 before 0-0?

quiet round here so just had a quick look at this, crazy game.  Ke2 looks like a !! killer at first but maybe Black can hold with 28...Rxh2 29.Rxh2 Bg3 30.Qd4+ Qg7.

Everything else looks horrible...

25.Ke2 Rf7

[25...Rb7 26.b5 Ne5 (26...Be6 27.bxc6 Rg7+-; 26...Qe8 27.bxc6 Rb2+ 28.Kf1 Rxh2
29.Rxh2 Bg3 30.Rh5 Qe5 31.Ng2 Bxf4 32.Ngxf4 Rf5±) 27.fxe5 dxe5 28.Qb1 Qd6 29.Qxe4 Rbf7 30.Rxh4 gxh4 31.Rxh4 Rg7 (31...Bf5 32.Nxf5 Rxf5 33.Bd3+-) 32.Bd3+-]

26.b5 Qf8

[26...Bg3 27.Rh5 Be6 28.bxc6 Rb2+ 29.Kf1 Bxf4 30.Nxf4 Qf6 31.Rxh7+! Rxh7 32.Rxh7+ Kxh7
33.Qh5++-]

27.bxc6 [27.Rxh4 gxh4 28.bxc6 Rb2+ 29.Ke1 Qg7 30.Qd4÷]

27...Rb2+ 28.Kf1 Rxh2

[28...Rxf4+ 29.Kg1 Bf2+ 30.Rxf2 Rfxf2 31.Qd4+ Qg7 32.Qxe4 Rf7 33.Bd3] 29.Rxh2 Bg3 30.Qd4+ Qg7

Not fun trying to find that OTB.

Try as I might I still can't make that line work. After 30...Qg7 31. Rg2 gf4 (31...Bh3 32. f5 +-) 32. Nb6! Bh3 33. Bxf7 f3 34. Qxg7 Kxg7 35. Bd5 and no way to stop c7-c8. This seems very bad for black, I am sad to say.

The position after 29...Rbf7 was reached already by transposition in Stopa-Bogosavljevic, Wch U18 Belfort 2005. There followed 30.Bd3 Bb7 31.c4 Qa3 32.Qxe5 Kg8 33.Sf5 Txf5 34.Lxf5 Qa2+ 35.Ke3 Qa3+ 36.Kd2 1-0.
