Hm, White scores incredibly well with 12.a4 as a whole, which is certainly responsible for new developments like the Perunovic-Variation.

A book by the name giver called "The Modernized Benko" has been anounced by Thinkers Publishing. I doubt this will cover the old main line though.

A shame that this thread has gone quiet. 13.Ra3 seems to score incredibly well for white - is this mentioned in any books on the opening, and does anyone know the current theoretical status of the line?

Well, the main point of 12.a4! Qa5 13.Bd2 is that 13...Rfb8 can be answered by 14.Nb5! and this is obviously not possible after 12.Qe2 Qa5! 13.Bd2 Rfb8 when White has to defend b2. Now 14.Nd1 Qa6 is typical and seems okay for Black as does 14.b3 Ng4 15.Rac1 Qa6.

Got it.  Thanks.   Smiley

I think 12.a4 is the better move order because 12.Qe2 allows Black to organise his queenside counterplay in time with 12...Qa5!, e.g. 13.a4 Rfb8 14.Bd2 Rxb2! 15.Nd1 Rxd2 16.Nxd2 Nxd5 (or Nxe4) is fine for Black.

In this 12.Qe2 Qa5 line what happens if White plays 13.Bd2 (as he does after 12.a4 Qa5)?

This is not possible after 12.a4 Qa5 13.Bd2. Also it´s not clear if e2 is really the queen´s best square, at least not so early.

As Black I would avoid the whole issue with the Perunovic-Variation where Black seems to be okay (at least for now  Wink).

Is there a clear choice between 12.a4 and 12.Qe2 right now?

This early ...Qa5 business seems to have become very trendy all of a sudden. It not only avoids this but some other tricky lines as well.

6...Bg7 is also covered in an article by Kuzmin in the latest Chessbase Magazine (163). He calls the line Perunovic Variation and suggests that 8.a7 might be White´s best. I haven´t looked at it yet.

I investigated this line a month or two ago after it was covered in a ChessPub update and also thought it was the most promising way to play against the Benko Accepted. It's been played quite a few times before - e.g.:

16...Ne5!? & 20...Nxd2!?

I remember when I was looking at it that I thought perhaps White should start trying 8.e5!? - maybe Black has good play here as well, but it seems critical.

thanks for quick reply Vass, or GM level maybe, or super GM, etc. etc.

It is a problem line theoretically though, no doubts about it.
