Also, if you use the PGN button to enter your games (just put the pgn between the pgn tags) it will be easier for some to view them and comment on them.  I know that I prefer it.   Smiley

Yes, some of my advice was assuming your rating was lower than it is.  You may be beyond Silman's Endgame book.

I do think you missed a tactical shot at move 17.

My USCF rating is in the low 2000 range.

My ELO Rating is 2120.

It changes things a little... The majority of us don't have that rating, so it's difficult to help someone better than us  Smiley

But advice number one I always hear is analysing games. Our games (first without engine, and then with an engine to verify our previous thoughts), and games played in the same opening we use to try, with positions related to the ones we get or with same ideas...

As a 1962 ELO rating myself, all the advices here would be interesting for me too.

I am doubting in buying Yusupov' QualityChess middlegame series of books also...

Salut,

I think Simon Webb's strategy works only if you're already a strong club player (1800+), else random tactics will get in the way.

And even there, it may be a better bet to complicate the game...

Where to start?  Some Advice:   Smiley

Annotate and publish your games.  It will force you to look at them closely.

Get and use a chess engine to go over your games.  It will help you locate tactical problems.  Analyze your games with stronger players -- they know things the engines won't and can explain "ideas" that are foreign to the engines.

Practice tactics.  chesstempo.com is a good online site for that.

Play more open / tactical games.  Study games.  Morphy's games are one great place to start.

Study and practice endgames.  Silman's Complete Endgame course is a great book for that.

Keep playing and asking how you can improve.

Hi,

thank you very much for you answers. Some of them are very useful.
Yesterday, i played another game, and this time i missed a tactial shoot. Here is my game:

[White: MaSu]
[Black:N.N]
30 Minutes/ Player
1.d4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.e3 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Bd3 Nf6 6.Nbd2 b6 7.0-0 Bd6 8.Qe2 Bb7 9.dxc5 Bxc5 10.e4 dxe4 11.Nex4 Be7 12.Rd1 Qc7 13.Bg5 Nxe4 14.Bxe4 0-0 15.Bc2 Bxg5 16.Nxg5 g6 17. Qg4 h5 18.Qh4 Ne7 19.Ne4 Bxe4 20.Bxe4 Rad8 21.Qf6 Rxd1 22.Rxd1 Rd8 23.Rd4 Rxd4 24.Qxd4 Nc6 25.Qe3 Qd6 26.g3 Ne5 27.Qe2 f5 28.Bc2 Kf7 29.Lb3 Kf6 30.h3 Qd3 31.Kf1 Qxe2 32.Kxe2 Nd7 33.Ba4 Nc5 34.Bc6 e5 35.b4 Ne6 36.h4 Nc7 37.a4 Ke6 38.Kd3 Kd6 39.Bb7

and Black lost on time. On move 30, he offered me a draw (both players got 2 minutes), but i moved on. At the end the game is equal, and i offered him a draw, and he was happy. I think it was not fair, to beat him with time. He played quiet good all the game and so the result is ok.

What do you think now about this game? Where could i play better? I think i missed something at move 17 but i could not calculate it.
Colle is not so agressive like 1.d4 2.c4 but it is very solid. Do you think, that the chances to win are much smaler than in 1.d4 2.c4 openings? My opponent has 500 ELO points less than me, so i want to play a game without complications and without any chances for him (Tigerchess!S.Webb). Was this the wrong decision? Why was it not possible, to beat this weaker player, with this strategy?

Look at the game from GM Giri in Reykjavik this week
GM Giri, Anish(2722)–Christiansen, Johan-Sebastian (2071)–19.02.2013
He won with the same strategy. No chances for Black and later he won the endgame easily.

I've rarely seen such a group of disappointing replies.  The OP asks for help, and all we can give is a couple of scolds and "go read a book."  Surely we can do better than that.

Perhaps we could do better, but we really need more information to make a recommendation.  What's the poster's rating?  How old is he/she, how long have they playing, what amount of studying have they done in the past, what books or other information have they been exposed to, etc?

I think that we should combine and sticky some of these "how do I improve" threads, and then refer people to the stickied posts, as most of these threads are more or less the same.  IMO.

The question of how to prosecute an attack effectively is a difficult one.  It's essentially a matter of judgment and feel, coupled with the ability to calculate well and recognize the tactics.  There's no quick fix.  This is a skill you develop over time, with both practice and study.

A few specific tips:

-- it's easy to become enamored of and over estimate your own chances.  Always keep an eye on your opponent's counterplay.

-- pick a target; usually the opponent's weakest point.

-- in situations where you are advancing pawns in an attempt to open files, you will get to a point where you can capture with a pawn and open a file.  Think first.  Sometimes it's better to wait to open a file, and first build up behind the pawns.  Then decide whether to capture or advance.

-- generally speaking, build up your attacks before launching them.  As Yasser Seirawan says, invite all your pieces to the party.

-- never assume the attack will play itself.  Always be calculating - both your moves and your opponent's defensive tries.

As for books and study material, we used to read Vukovic's Art of Attack in Chess.  Still a classic.  Today, you might also consider Aagaard's Attacking Manual.  It's excellent.

I would also suggest exposure to GM games.  Pick an attacking games anthology.  Or try games collections of famous attackers.  Kasparov and Alekhine are two personal favorites.

That's it in a nutshell. You are the only person who can improve yourself. The materials are all easily available, it's just a matter of doing the work now.

The old fashioned way was to read and study chess books.  I have no idea where to recommend you start based on one game, but have you read My SystemHow to Reassess Your Chess?  Have you looked at Yusupov's training course?  How about Euwe and Kramer's middlegame tomes?  There's so much study material out there, pick some and get to work.

Have you found the improvements you give above for yourself?

Analyse your games without a computer. Try different things and look what works and what doesn´t.  Do this with all of your games with a long time control until you have the feeling you cannot do better. This should take a few hours per game. It´s hard work but there is no shortcut. Use a computer only to verify your results of analysis.

This was a normal game at the chessclub. We play a normal tournament. It doesn't depend on fast or slow games. Your decisions for making moves are the same, if you dont know, how to play in such positions. So, how can you train it, to play better such positions, to make the correct move.

This seems to me to be an unfortunately common sort of question these days:  how do I get better at chess, based on this one fast internet game I played.
