Do you have to take with the Bishop to attempt to demonstrate this? 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. 0-0 Nf6 5. d4 Bxd4

If you take with the pawn, you've just transposed into one of the lines that starts 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Bc4 Nf6 5. 0-0 Bc5 etc.

But that's the regular Max Lange attack after 6.e5 isn't it? I think you have to assume White wants to reach that for a repertoire like this to have any point. I haven't looked at the Max Lange proper for years, but if even that is good for Black, White's entire opening is just pointless.

The last time I tried (half-heartedly) to make this work for White, the Anti-Max Lange 5...Nxe4 was the biggest problem. Though I'm not on top of the 5...Bxd4 line either.

Probably so! Though I don't know how many chess players will be able to demonstrate it. It's been referred to as the Max Lange Gambit in the Dangerous Weapons book.

"just bad" of course is theoretically speaking, I've lost quickly to that line in internet rapid and blitz multiple times, it's definitely tricky.

btw, looking at the original book, I couldn't find any mention of 4 0-0 d6 either, which avoids the Koltanowski Gambit proper.

The Italian line with 3...Bc5 4 0-0 Nf6 5 d4 is just bad now though, right?

The Max Lange attack is intriguing. But how to get there? The anti-Max Lange is equal at best. And then there is the Giucco Piano. White's best seems to be to play an early d3. That's an odd match-up with the Max Lange and anti-Max Lange.

If Carlsen plays it in a blitz game, watch out.
Edited:
Actually that's a good idea! -- hire some elite GM to play some line in your repertoire just before your book hits the market.

[quote author=3536580 link=1556723191/0#0 date=1556723191]The description says that it will retain the same basic lines but updated.

The cover art shows the 2N French, Rossolimo, and Max Lange (same as 1st edition).  Burgess can be trusted to do good work.

I noticed this on the Gambit site, coming September 2019. IIRC the original book was a 1 e4 repertoire with the Max Lange, Qxd4 +Rossolimo Sicilians, and Two Knights French.

Interesting. I was on their website a couple of weeks ago and dont recall seeing this on there. The description says that it will retain the same basic lines but updated. I hope the book has more explanations than the original did.
