Hi.

On the topic of errata. On page 211 there is a short explanation that black should play:
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 d6 4.c3!? Nf6 5.Bd3 0-0 6.0-0 c5 7.h3 Nc6 8.Re1 cxd4 transposing to earlier but this reaches a position that black is dissuaded from playing. It's a small shortcoming though and the only one I found so I am not to displeased in that regard.

I somewhat think this could be a line to look at closely though because white can also go
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 d6 4.c3!? Nf6 5.Bd3 0-0 6.0-0 c5 7.h3 Nc6 8.d5 Na5
and something other than 9.c4 (which is met by 9...e5). E.g.
9.Re1!? b6 10.Bd2
10.Bf4!? planning dxe6 is also interesting
10...e5 11.b4 Nb7 12.a4
And black is obviously solid but white has somewhat started his play on the queenside and not having developed many pieces he is also relatively flexible.

Have a nice day.

Hi.

Yes. I cannot find anything about it either.

Without consulting other sources except the database. After:
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.Bg5 a6
White actually scores quite well in corr but has a small negative score otb. It doesn't exactly look killer though.
5.Nf3 b5 6.Bd3
6.a4 b4 7.Nd5 h6! 8.Bd2 a5 9.c3 e6 10.Nf4 Nf6 and it doesn't look to me like white is getting anywhere special. Black is quite solid.
6.e5!? Bb7 7.Qe2 could be interesting but not very forcing and black should have a couple of ways to a playable game.
6...Bg4
Most active. Black should basically be able to get his pieces to good squares now. An example line would be
7.Ne2 c5 8.c3 Nc6 9.a4 b4 10.O-O bxc3 11.bxc3 Nf6 12.e5 Nh5
With OK counterplay.

There are other 5th moves but I can't find a scenario where black does not benefit from being able to play h7-h6 at some point.

Have a nice day.

Yes, I just checked. Absent.

The lack of Bg5 does seem an odd omission. Arguably rather less challenging than against the Pirc, sure, but deserving of discussion.

Something that the author should have included, and that the publishing house should have caught.

The book has no index, only a skimpy outline at the start of each chapter; and the table of contents is pretty unhelpful, so it's hard to work out which chapter a particular line would be in if it were there. But, as far as I can see, there is no mention of 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.Bg5. I suppose Fernandez would recommend 4...a6, which presumably could transpose to one of his main lines; but wouldn't you expect some analysis?

Hi.

Fair enough.

The previously diagrammed position is specifically in "The Modernized Modern Defence" reached by:

1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 d6 4.Nf3 e5 5.Bg5!? f6 6.Be3 Nh6 7.Be2! 0-0 8.Nc3 Ng4 9.Bc1 Nc6 10.h3 Nh6

5.Be2 gets no mention despite being in Tiger's book. This is an omission (still a relatively small though) and an example of why I only called the book very close to a full repertoire.

Have a nice day.

Hello.

If it's that position then likely
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 d6 4.Nf3 e5 5.Be2 Nc6 6.Be3 Nh6 7.Nc3!? Ng4 8.Bg5 f6 9.Bc1 Nc6 10.h3 Nh6 (Modern)
or
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 O-O 6.Be2 e5 7.Be3 Ng4 8.Bg5 f6 9.Bc1 Nc6 10.h3 Nh6 (Gligoric KID)

Thanks, but I can work out "likely" myself. I wanted the exact move order.

Edit. This would be the position from your sequence:
* * * * * * * *

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *

Yes, but what I wanted to know was what move order to reach that position is given in the book.

Not really on topic but I recently looked at
1.e4 g6 2.d4 d6(!) 3.c4 e5
And concluded it seems very interesting as you can avoid these standard 4.Nf3 lines with a new (sort of) cutting edge approach.

Hi.

A key line from The Modern Tiger (2015) is
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 d6 4.Nf3 e5 5.Be2 Nc6 6.Be3 Nh6 7.Nc3!? Ng4 8.Bg5 f6 9.Bc1 (9.Bh4! Tiger) and now Tiger gives a couple of moves.

Maybe it's this one.

Regards.

Hey.

Do you have the exact position?

With say:
https://lichess.org/editor
You can get a FEN string to use with the Insert Fen Diagram in the chesspub posting menu.

Edit. This would be the position from your sequence:
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

Have a nice day.

There's a diagram in the Chess Monthly review but without giving the moves. It's a sort of King's Indian with ...f7-f6 and ...Nh6. Does anyone know how we get there?

Something like this possibly: 1 e4 g6 2 d4 Bg7 3 c4 d6 4 Nf3 e5 5 Nc3 Nc6 6 Be3 Nh6 7 Be2 Ng4 8 Bg5 f6 9 Bc1 0-0 10 h3 Nh6. Is that right?

Hi.

So. I very much forgot to bring the book last weekend. Kinda strange as in the large pack I had I remembered all minor items, two other non-chess books and whatnot.

Been reading for well over an hour now though and it looks good. Really it's a repertoire that's not to centered around covering every half played attempt at a move by white. Focus is on presenting the best lines and continuations. This is actually kind of important in the modern. Many lines and continuations in the Modern are somewhat subpar but often not obviously so to the average or even really good player. Guidance given around what to go for seems generally fine though. Also if there is an especially interesting continuation it often gets a mention even while not ultimately being recommended. There is also a bit of what I would call bonus material. E.g. some analysis of the Sniper and some Philidor stuff. It seemed to me like at one point it seemed somewhat clear Mr. Fernandez would have read this very forum as well, which is of course +rep Cool

There is some things to be said about lines and what's there and not there etc. as well obviously. It is very close to a full repertoire though and overall good stuff imo.

Edit: for a modern book there is also an interesting chapter on the Austrian Pirc and one on the 6...c6 classical Pirc+some less mainline-esque transpositions in various modern positions. In other words the book seems relevant for Pirc players as well.

Have a nice day.

Whoops! My mistake. I thought it was already out. I'll circle back and check out some of the imminent reviews in a couple of weeks.
