I got it, not sure what to do with it. I advise against trying to use this as any kind of study material.

I replaced "A" with "%41" and the forum let me post. Stupid internet tricks.

If forced lowercase, Google fails to locate file. Did seem able to send you as a URL via PM however.

Here is a tip for URLs and (all) caps.

working URL, notice the caps in YaBB, they're important
https://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?action=recent
  1. protocol : https - not case sensitive
  2. domain : www.chesspub.com - not case sensitive
  3. path : cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl - usually case sensitive, depends on the server
  4. parameters : action=recent - probably case sensitive, depends on the script

Based on the above rules

Also working url
HTTPS://WWW.CHESSPUB.COM/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?action=recent

Non-working url
https://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/chess/YaBB.pl?action=RECENT

So, if you have a working URL that is all caps, just change the protocol and/or domain to lower-case. It will still work, and won't be blocked for being in all caps.

Found a great example but site won't let me post the URL as it says, no all caps! Argh!

Edit:

So, pretty frustrated at this point. Maybe pencil & paper is my only choice. <sigh>. If anyone has links to sites with  decision-tree style diagrams of move-orders for various openings and going deeper into the variations as well please post them. Otherwise, time to move on. BIG thanks to the respondent for trying to help.

Sounds like maybe you're more tech savvy than me perhaps? I don't even know what Firefox is[0], though I admit that's on me.
So an idea of a source I was looking for was one that clearly allows[1] or promotes your ability to queue a page to your printer, typically by a printer icon[2] you click on for example.

But regardless of how they are printed, the fancy, clickable displays on that site didn't look like what I was looking for in the first place; A simple B&W[3] diagram in algorithmic[4] tree-type display. A Move Tree[5]. If I've missed something obvious, I welcome enlightenment. It's why I asked. Smiley

  • [0] Firefox is a browser, and a browser is an application for (mostly) viewing web pages. If you don't know, then you are probably using your operating system's default browser, and it probably isn't Firefox.
  • [1] Printing is almost certainly allowed for any random web site. It's possible for a site to disable printing, but it's almost never done, because you could always just point a camera at the screen.
  • [2] The site doesn't provide a print icon because the browser provides one. It's in the menu. Or you could try Ctrl+P, although notably that doesn't work in my version of Firefox. So if you can't find it, search for "How to print a web page". Printing is just a few clicks, if you are still having trouble, just find a young person to show you how.
  • [3] B&W should be an option at the time of printing.
  • [4] You keep using the word algorithmic, but I don't understand what it means in this context.
  • [5] If you don't like that how that move tree looks, as you found there are many others to choose from.

With how to print out of the way, I should point out that your plan of offline study via an opening tree is probably not the way to go. The whole point of the tree is to interact with it. Offline, it's probably best to use a different tool, e.g. an actual book. If you have a smartphone, there's more chess apps than you can shake a stick at, some free, some trees!

I don't own a printer, but I was able to use Firefox to print your first link to a pdf. I changed to landscape and selected only page 2 because that's where the tree shows up. What issue are you having that it is not "Printable" for you?

This is the best I've found but not sure if it's printable for off-line study.

http://www.chesstree.net/

A w-i-d-e variety of different types are pictured here:

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=chess+move+trees&qpvt=chess+move+trees&form...

But that is not a single page or searchable in practice.
Think of taking an opening book, stripping it of all commentary, and just displaying an algorithmic tree of moves & variations.

Hope this helps,

Cathexis

I'm a little vague on the idea of a Printable Move-Tree. Can you provide a link to the non-printable site you found so I can get a better idea?

Greetings,

I have looked and I know there's whole site on this, but they don't seem very printable or even not printable at all except by screen shot. I'm looking more for a simpler algorithmic black & white layout that is more printer-friendly. I realize they don't teach theory. But I'm surprised they seem so hard to find. Any pointers out there?

TIA,
Cathexis
