These middle-games are very double-edged, though especially risky for black in practice. However, maybe the bigger problem is how to get there. For example after 6. Bc4 e6 7. Be3 a6 8. Qe2 Be7 9. O-O-O O-O, white has 10. Nc6!? bc6

and now 11h4 or 11Bc5.

Or after 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 Nf6 4. Nc3 cd4 5. Nd4 Nc6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Be3 Be7 8. Qe2 O-O 9. O-O-O Qc7, 10. Rhg1!? accelerates white's play.

Refinements like these may be one reason black considers alternatives, including an early ...Bd7. For example 6. Bc4 e6 7. Be3 a6 8. Qe2 Bd7

Thanks! Did they indicate the result of that correspondence game?

You're welcome. No, but it is apparently the 13th game here (Vielsack-Kelemen).

The game Kaehmann Joerg - De Gleria Francesco was won by white, despite white being rated about 200 points lower.

However, the chances seem balanced after:
19. Be3 b4! 20. Nd5 Bd5 21. ed5 Rfc8

This was given as unclear in the ECO from 5 years ago; it gave some further moves from a correspondence game from 2012.

These lines are hazardous in practice:
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cd4 4. Nd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Be3
Be7 8. Qe2 O-O 9. O-O-O Qc7 10. Bb3 a6 11. Rhg1 b5 12. g4 Nd4 13.
Bd4 Nd7 14. g5 Nc5 15. Qh5 Bb7 16. Rg4 Nb3 17. ab3 e5 18. Rh4 h6 19. Be3 Qc8 20. gh6 g6 21. Rg4 Kh7 22. Qh3 Qe6 23. Nd5 Bd5 24. Rd5 Rac8 25. Qg2 Rc6 26. h4 Rfc8 27. c3 a5 28. black could deviate  earlier with 11...b5 12g4. 12...b4 12...Na5 and 12...Nxd4 have been tried. I suggest 12... b4 13. Nc6 Qc6 14. Nd5 Nd5! 15. ed5 which is a position that has been analyzed by Golubev and others. Black can choose between 15...Qc7 or 15...Qb7.

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Bc4 e6 7. Be3 Be7 8. Qe2 O-O 9. O-O-O Qc7 10. Bb3 a6 11. Rhg1 b5 12. g4

12...Nd4 13Rd4 leads to known positions (usually arrived after 11g4 Nd4). White can try to punish black's move order with the natural 12...Nd4 13Bd4. 13....Nd7 14. g5 Nc5

I think black is probably allright in this dangerous position. White can consider 15Qh5, 15f4 and 15Bf6.

One way for black to take the edge off the game is to play  6...Qb6, where white is usually left pursuing a strategical advantage instead of an attack on the king.

Fascinating stuff even after 20 years.

In my notes, I see a preference for 10. Rhg1!? a6 11. g4!? Many moves have been tried here with little success. I'd like to make 11...Nxe4 12...d5 work, but no such luck. Stockfish suggests 11...g6!? intending 12g5 Nh5. I think 11...g6 is a novelty, perhaps a TN if it works.

In the game line, after 10.Bb3 a6 11.Rhg1 Nd7 12.g4 Nc5, white has 13Nf5!? (in addition 13...g5). For his part, black could deviate  earlier with 11...b5 12g4. 12...b4 12...Na5 and 12...Nxd4 have been tried. I suggest 12... b4 13. Nc6 Qc6 14. Nd5 Nd5! 15. ed5 which is a position that has been analyzed by Golubev and others. Black can choose between 15...Qc7 or 15...Qb7. White seems a little better, but it looks playable.

The tornado watch has been lifted where I live. Enough chess!

According to John Nunn this plan is not accurate because White wins a tempo: after 19 ... e5 the rook goes directly to d2 wheras in the other variation White needs 2 moves to play Be3 and then Rd2 ...
I am not sure though whether this tempo is decisive here

Since Mifsud-Garcia,1994, it is known that 18.Bxd4 Nxb3+ 19.axb3 e5 favours Black. Why is this not playable after 18.Rxd4 ?

Agh .. I think I should go sleeping

Another Velimirovic Question

I recently played the Velimirovic attack as a Black and was confronted with:

1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bc4 e6 7.Be3 Be7 8.Qe2 0-0 9.0-0-0 Qc7 10.Bb3 a6 11.Rhg1 Nd7 12.g4 Nc5 13. g5 Bd7 14. Qh5 Rfc8 15. Rg3 g6 16. Qh6 Bf8 17. Qh4 Nxd4 18. Bxd4!? ... and I got an unpleasent position. I think I can remeber that I have read somewhere that 18. Rxd4 is the right move here. However, it seems that Bxd4 is more logical. So is there something wrong with Bxd4? It seems that Black is in trouble, for example after 18 ... b5 19.Rh3 h5 20. gh Kh7 21. Qf6 .  ...
Okay I ve just seen that 21 ... Sb3+ 22. ab e5 23. Be3 b4 is  very strong for black ... wow  Shocked
