Close, maybe...but if you compare with Scandinavian opening, Black has pawn weakness and a limited scope for the light square bishop

8.c4 is not mentioned in the SOS article...however isn't Black really close to equalizing a few moves later...

Does the SOS mention: 5.Qd3 ?
I recorded the variations:
A) 5...Nf6 6.Nxf6 gxf6 7.Ne2 Nc6 8.a3 Bd7 9.Be3 ooo 10.c4 Dh5 11.ooo Bh6 12.Ng3 Qg6 13.Bxh6 Qxh6 14.Qe3 Qxe3 15.fxe3 f5 18.Be2 Apicella-Kosten,Paris 1994
B) 5...Nc6 6.Nf3 Nf6 7.Nxf6 gxf6 8.c4 Qg5 9.a3 Rg8 (9..Bd7 10.Be3 ooo 11.ooo Ne7 12.Rg1 Bh6 13.g4  : 9..Bh6 10.Bxh6 Qxh6 11.Qe3) 10.Be3 Bd7 Horvath,A-Hoang Thanh Trang/Hungary 1998

Not very aggressive, but it's Black duty to play tactics.

If the Katalymov really is a good idea, then we should see more Scandinavians going 3.Nc3 Qa5 4.d4 e6, shouldn't we?! Grin
