Stigma and others.

Vigus' book is NOT a repertoire book. It is about the Pirc. This is defined by the first 3 moves. It is also not about the Modern, the Najdorf, or about basket-weaving.

Similarly books about the King's Indian do not cover Tromps, Torres and things. Because this is not their subject matter. Repertoire books should however do so.

To criticise authors for not doing something that is not their purpose is akin to criticising a fine wine for not being a good whisky/whiskey. And Vigus' book is a fine wine.

Again: advice I have written before:
read (in this case Vigus' explanation of what his book is),
read again carefully
think
then ... write.

Yes - but for repertoire books: worth looking at nc3, f4 stuff.
Nf3 d3 whatever - naturally valid sets of moves with differing ideas. The pseudo-Grand Prix a particular challenge.

But not everything can be given. At some point players must think for themselves. Guess people just want to read absolutely all their moves onto the ICC screen.

If players have no grasp of chess beyond copying verbatim, suggest to get some collected games books and study. Blitz - no time to think so dont bother until some studying undertaken. If you want to improve....

No - the starting point of the book is the position after 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6.

This is a problem with virtually every book on the Pirc to date. Whether the Pirc properly starts after 1, 2 or 3 moves is not the point; a Pirc player will need to be prepared for White's early alternatives and why shouldn't the Pirc experts writing the books give some guidance on that? They surely have to face these lines themselevs!

Pirc Alert claimed to be a complete defence to 1.e4, but included only the 3rd move alternatives 3.Bd3 and 3.f3. The reader is on his own after 2.c4 (offering an English Botvinnik System, Maroczy Bind or King's Indian), 2.Nc3 (Closed Sicilian, Grand Prix Attack or Vienna Game) and 2.d3 (the King's Indian Attack). All these moves are annoying and dangerous if Black isn't well-prepared, partly because they are so different from the standard d4-e4 (-f3/f4) pawn centres that Pirc players love trying to break down.

When will authors start taking this problem seriously?

Hi

is anything in this book how to proceed for Black in the move order 1.e4 d6 2.Nf3 (Nf6 3.d3), i meet this often playing internet chess, and what to do with 1.e4 d6 2.d3, to stay in the Pirc line

thanks in advance

I wouldn't expect that there is, because when White plays d3 it isn't a Pirc.  Such lines could lead to e.g. a King's Indian Reversed or Closed Sicilian.

I'm intrigued now. Which line are you referring too. I too like to look at old lines.

this is another line that I am looking at which I have not played for many years. James appears to have beefed up the white attack.

Well at this stage I have to check out my analysis but I think that white's possibilities are understated in the line

1. e4 d6 2. e4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6 4.f4 Bg7 5.Nf3 0-0 6.e5 (wimping out with dxe is one sensible idea that I suspect would be drawish in correspondence but that the better player would have the chances over the board) Nfd7 7. h4 c5 8.h5 cxd4 9.hxg6 dxc3 10. gxf7 Rxf7 11.Bc4 e6 12. Ng5 Nf8 (I would play 12...Ne5
which again looks interesting for both players. 13. Nxf7 14. Qh5+ Kg8 15.Bd3 h6 16 Rh4

and I am not sure that Nbd7 is sufficient but need to check my analysis.

Well congratulations James. The book is magic. My copy arrived yesterday. I have games starting in the Champions League on Ist september and need to ensure that my opening repertoire is up to speed. I have found one improvement for white in the Austrian Attack but black can avoid it. I have checked out some of my really  old sources and have found one line in Chessman Quarterly  which black completely avoids. The line is also given in "The Pirc defence" by Botterell and Keene. i suppose that i will just have to ckeck my databases and more recent books to see why and where black deviated.

I will post more when I check out more sources.

This will be my bible for the Pirc Defence for a long time...until Mikhail Marin decides to write a book on it of course.  Grin

I'm sticking to this book over the Pirc Alert. This new book by Vigus is far, far more detailed and fills in alot of the gaps left by the Pirc Alert. But if you want to be really complete...pick up Tiger's Modern by Qualitychess books as well because the Pirc and the Modern are very similar in structure and Tiger's Modern book goes into lines left out of the Vigus book for space concerns. There *are* move orders you should be aware of in order NOT to use the Pirc Defence and stay in Modern lines.

My only other  quibble about the Pirc Defence is that the setup is darn similar to the Philidor so I'd also pick up The Philidor Files as well just to round out the surprises you can throw at White. The g4 lines for White are overrated in my opinion(and that's after reading Chesspub's analysis) and the Philidor book dismisses the concerns.

The detail and effort that has gone into this book is very apparent.
