@saubkhir

Thanks for the reply. However, I haven't been able to find a source that recommends 6...Bd2 for Black; 'Chess Openings for Black Explained' gives 6...e5 and 'The Gambit Guide to the Bogo-Indian' thinks that 6...e5 and 6...0-0 both equalise, providing more detail on 6...0-0.

Interestingly both books quote Flear-Adams, Hastings 1996 as being a model example of how to play as Black:

6...0-0 7.Ne2 e5 also seems equal, based on the game Hulak-Djuric, 1991.

Bxd2 is the main move which is recommended by most of the authors. Though I don't get the point of why not castle first and wait one more move like a3 forcing Bxd2. Anyway, e3 blocks the c1/d2 bishop and black can always get the bishop pairback wih Ne4.

I would suggest bd2 followed by Ne4/f5 or d6-e5 with usual Bogo position.

I have a question on the Catalan Bogo-Indian variation that arises after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3 Bb4 4.Bd2 Qe7 5.Bg2 Nc6 6.e3:

1) Does the move 6.e3 offer better chances of an advantage than 6.Nf3?

2) What is Black's best reply? According to my database 6...Bd2 is the most common move but doesn't score overly well, 6...e5 is played almost as often and played by stronger players on average, and 6...0-0 is another option that scores well.
